Don't easyjet have a size not weight restriction for cabin baggage ? i.e. 
anything that fits through this gap is OK ? Obviously if it is 'legal'

They do, but provided your hand baggage does not exceeed that size too 
blatantly (and you don't show it to the lady at check-in... ie. small 
bacpacks are a good option), there's no real problem...
