Smoking in pubs
Whilst at Glasgow this weekend, I was appalled at the amount of smoke
in pubs we visited - truly appalling, and I can honestly say the
worst I can ever remember anywhere.
To name them: Scotia Bar, Victoria Bar, Three Judges,
We also went in Clockwork but had a smoker with us so elected to sit
in the smoking area, so I can't complain about that one.
My throat hasn't recovered yet.

You should have been in Inverness, as I was. Just about every pub has
a "Vote for the Publican Party" poster in the window. The party claims
that a survey showed that 82% (that is not a typo) of Scots want to
smoke in pubs, and that anti-smoking legislation should be stopped.
I found a single pub (well outside the city) which has a no-smoking
policy, and that's only in the room they use as a restaurant, and only
before 2130hrs!

I too don't like smoking in pubs,
but,
but.
Having just returned from Dublin where no smoking is now enforced, the
pubs decided to put a few tables and an awning outside, so that smokers
could carry on, as smoking is legal out of doors.
The council swiftly realised that they were on to a money spinner here,
and charged the pubs for their useage of the pavements, those down Grafton
Street averaging over 12,000 this year for example.
The pubs paid up.
Next year's fees are set to treble, with 33,000 being the norm. and 500
Euros/sq. metre being the set price.
Geese and golden eggs springs to mind, and no doubt the council won't be
happy until Dublin is without its pubs:-(
Here in jolly old Britain of course we're about to let the councils loose
on licensing.
A good scheme whereby licensing will be in the hands of (mainly) political
persons, and where costs have gone from, for example, 30.00 every three
years for Keighley golf club to 800.00 for this year alone.
With councils being noted for their efficiency and cost effectiveness we
can no doubt expect to see an increase on the 6 pubs/week presently
closing.

Now you know why the Scots have one fo the worst cancer records in Europe.
'Over the past 50 years, 682,000 people ? more than the current populations of Edinburgh
and Aberdeen combined* ? have been killed by tobacco in Scotland.'

I know - I like Glasgow and I'm up there from time to time, but the smoke
really pisses me off. It's far worse than down here. Even in semi-classy
pubs like The State and the Horsehoe Bar it;s bad and you go home reeking
and dry-throated from someone else's drug addiction.
Not sure what you can do though, because Scots in general seem to want to
rush themselves into an early grave, in all sorts of ways.

we were in Glasgow a few weeks back, & luckily enough the first pub we tried
was the Phoenix, just off George Square -
completely no smoking pub!
enjoyed a few pints of Caledonian 80, before heading back to the airport,
clothes still smelling fresh!
