Win a trip for two with Svalbard Wildlife Service, exploring the
fjords of Longyearbyen and Esmark glacier from 5-7 August 2005.
The trip begins on August 5 2005 with the boat journey from your
guesthouse at Longyearbyen to the wilderness camp in Ymerbukta - your
base for the next three days.
Expedition members spend the afternoon familiarising themselves with
the camp and the surrounding area, with dinner around the campfire in
the evening.
The following morning the team sets out on the one hour trip over the
moraine to the Esmark glacier. Scaling the clear blue ice of the
glacier requires crampons, harnesses, ice axes and ropes to negotiate
the deep crevasses and snow bridges, but it's all worth it to enjoy
lunch at the top with a beautiful view of the fjords and the area
around the bay.
Fully equipped with dry suits and life jackets, day three is spent in
kayaks floating silently between the ice flows, the birds and the
seals. After lunch, the trip concludes with a guided tour of the
Russian settlement of Barentsburg.
Trip requirements:
No glacier or kayak experience is needed, full training is provided by
the expedition guides. The trip requires a moderate level of physical
fitness. Hiking is on fairly easy terrain with sand and stone as a
base. Some places have a moderate gradient. A backpack is required for
day trips.
Too cold and energetic for me but some of you might like it - Jean
