New to comping.

When entering competitions on-line and through any other medium
actually, will my chances of winning be reduced if I dont tick the box
or boxes accepting offers from the company setting the competition ?

Who knows?  Chances are you'll get the junk anyway if you do or don't as
most sites probably don't give a monkey's about data protection and you'll
be hard pushed to find out who sold your details anyway.

I don't tick the boxes unless I am really really interested and I do win.
