Cannabis Link to Driver in Crash That Killed Eight

By James Tapsfield, PA

A teenage driver involved in a road crash that killed eight people may have
been smoking cannabis, an inquest heard today.

The victims including a toddler died after a BMW driven by 19-year-old
Mitch Treliving apparently crossed the central reservation of the A23 at
Pyecombe, near Brighton in East Sussex last May.

The BMW 3 Series smashed head on into a Land Rover Freelander at 4.30pm on a
sunny Sunday afternoon.

Mr Treliving, from Faygate, near Horsham, was killed along with his passengers,
17-year-old Danielle Billingham, from Crawley, 17-year-old Gemma Smoker, from
Bewbush, and Aaron Sharpe, 20, and sister Katherine, 18, from Crawley.

Three people in the Land Rover 29-year-old Kate Beasley and her 33-year-old
husband Toby, from Godalming and two-year-old Marcus Mohabir also died.

Marcus father Steve, 36, from Godalming, managed to hold his dying sons hand
as emergency services raced to the scene even though he was trapped by his legs
in the wreckage.

An inquest into all eight deaths in Worthing, West Sussex, today heard that
post-mortem tests on Mr Treliving had shown only trace amounts of alcohol, but
more significant levels of cannabis.

Dr Patricia Beresford read coroner Roger Stone the findings of the tests.

Mr Treliving had previously used cannabis resin. I cant comment on whether he
may have been under the influence of the drug prior to driving.

Dr Beresford said the tests, carried out by another medic, could not be more
specific because cannabis persists in the system.

The inquest heard from other drivers who saw the BMW shortly before the
accident, and said it had been travelling at high speed and tailgating other
cars.

In other words he was driving in exactly the same manner as almost every
other teenage lad on the road. In other words driving as fast as possible as
often as possible. The fact the car was a reasonably powerful one combined
with his driving inexperience and being full of his friends are the obvious
primary factors but clearly those aren't worth highlighting. Much better to
mention and presumably blame it all on speculation that he may have been
smoking cannabis.

Many years ago when I was young and foolish - I sometimes drove after
smoking a few joints - and travelling at high speed and tailgating other
was the last thing I would have done .

Having been a passenger with other stoned drivers - never once did I see
any of them speeding or tailgating .

While the crash driver could have been under the influence - it seems
unlikely as its not the sort of thing that stoned drivers do going by my
own personal experience .

(these days i'm zero limit and wont touch the wheel even if its just a
pint i've had , needless to say people say i'm a boring bastard)

Re: Cannabis Link to Driver in Crash That Killed Eight
Sounds to me like the kid was drunk, and perhaps either still had THC
metabloites in his sytem from a previous smoking session, or maybe he smoked
that night. Either way it was most likely a combination of booze, teenage
wildness, and just an accident which is now probably being compounded by
your garden-variety "pot is the root of all tragedy" people.

I don't know about the rest of you people, but in the instances when I have
driven stoned, I've been more cautious and I'm a much more courteous driver
(at least compared to my usual white knuckled, teeth grinding,
traffic-congested journeys.) However, I'm not condoning driving under any
substance.. Swinging around thousands of pounds of metal isn't a game.

It sounds to me like he was being a complete prat (anyone who drives knows
the type) and unfortunately for all concerned came unstuck. Neither cannabis
nor alcohol required, especially when you're 19, you've a car full of
friends to impress and it's a sunny Sunday afternoon. It's a tragic incident
that's got absolutely nothing to do with cannabis imho.

I'm waiting for the headline "Sober Teen Kills 8 in Fiery Crash!".

The truth is that teens get in crashes more often than anyone else, whether
or not they have partaken of legal or illegal drugs.

And the other truth is that drivers who have only partaken of cannabis
products do not have accidents any more frequently than those who have not
partaken of any substance.

"So she went into the garden to cut a cabbage leaf to make an apple pie; and
at the same time a great she-bear, coming up the street pops its head into
the shop. `What! no soap?' So he died, and she very imprudently married the
barber; and there were present the Picninnies, and the Grand Panjandrum
himself, with the little round button at top, and they all fell to playing
the game of catch as catch can, till the gunpowder ran out at the heels of
 their boots."

A very close relative of mine was almost killed earlier this year by
some pratt cutting across thier path in a rush to get into a pubs car
park.

Having just left work, Pratt was in too much of a hurry to get into the
pub due to withdrawal from beer to concentrate on his driving but
passed a breath test with no tests at all made for alcohol dependancy
after the crash.

Admiting being fully in the wrong, the guy got off with a 600 pound
fine and 3 months disqualification for maiming someone for life in his
desperation for a drink..

I'd not condone driving under a smoke for one minute but when I have
done so in years gone by, I have driven far more cautiously than when
under the effects of alcohol or its withdrawal symptons.

So he could have had traces of general anaesthetic in his system for all
the difference it would make.

It's possible that the person's driving would have been worse had he not
had cannabis in his system.

What about your driving on the journey to score your Cannabis?
Was it an eager affair? I suppose the way round this is to never run out of
nerve settling Cannabis.

Think this out, my mate took his driving test stoned on skunk. His
methodology was, he intended to do most of his driving while stoned, so if
he could pass his test while stoned, it would be a driving ability test
while 'stoned' driving test...

He passed.

My wife just cannot do it - she gets so cautious, she'll keep thoinking
she's speeding until she's slowed down to about 15 mph, head right over the
steering wheel, looking all around and around like an owl on meth,

You forgot that it's biggest import is cold wet mud, most popular favourite

Tell me about it! I had to give up my favourite cycling route into work
because of cunts driving like that - nice country lane it was, up and over
the hill, nice scenery - it's all good in fact until you get some arsehole
in a sports hatch covered in Max Power stickers, passing you at ~60 mph only
1 foot from your damned right elbow and with nowhere on the left to move to.
Turned me into a freaking nervous wreck...

Re: Cannabis Link to Driver in Crash That Killed Eight
It is very sad and bad to hear about young car drivers involved in
major accidents ending their lives and those of other people.

Maybe it would be a good idea to encourage more people to wait until
they are older before they take up driving.

Until 20 or so years ago driving was less hectic, there were fewer cars
on the road and they were less powerful yet nobody ever suggests that
the times for L plate be increased. l

I have read research reports showing that well over half of young
people involved in deadly road accidents had illicits drugs (often
amphetamines) in their system.

Reduce the victims by requiring first bicycling, then motorcycling
until over 35 except in exceptional conditions.

I think that would help obviously.

Here in the USA the killer drug is alcohol and often it is not only
in young people (too young to legally drink) but in older people who
kill younger people. Worse than alcohol or any other drug are the number
of people driving impaired due to loss of sleep.
