VB Programmer for hire
Evening all, sorry I've not posted in ages, I've been mad busy.

My hard work has just been rewarded with redundancy so I'm now
available for work if anybody out there is looking for an experienced
VB & Cold Fusion programmer in Cumbria. However, I have noticed that
Cumbria is almost completely devoid of IT and what is there pays such
silly money that its quite obvious why so many people up and leave...
oh well, looks like I'll be selling the house i bought only a year ago
:(

I'm so sorry to hear your story, Tony. I know what it feels like to have
to get on your bike. Pinny the Much Older has tried to keep one step
ahead of the beat in IT, on three occasions, and maybe one day it'll pay
off, and we'll be able to settle down.

Once a wage slave always a wage slave without a fairly hefty push.
Redunancy is such a push... But it depends on how many contacts you
have that are really going to come up with work rather than just
saying they will when you start doing market research.

Once freelance or in business in your own right, very few people can
go back to being a wage slave. The freedom that being your own boss
gives is well worth the lack of security. Not that any waged job is
particulary secure these days...

Not realy within Cumbria, the problem is that it really is a 'dead
end' when it comes to technology, espeically programming. Besides,
setting up on ones own would require capital (to live on whilst
hutning for contracts and awaiting payment. I dont have and a customer
base which Cumbria doesn't have :(
I did do freelance once or twice and had to travel to London a lot for
it and had a hell of a job getting people to pay invoices on time. Not
a situation I want to get into again.

It is looking highly likely that I'll have to move to Newcastle or
Manchester to find work. Yet another skilled worker leaving Cumbria.
At times like this I really wish I was in a 'minority' of some sort,
there is no help for 'healthy white males' down on their luck!

Why do you need top travel for the bulk of programming work? Shirley,
it is ideal for telecommuting. OK you'll have to have physical
meetings to discuss an application, project or specification
occasionally but isn't the majority of a programmers work code
hacking? You can do that at a computer at home just as easily as one
in an office. Get a broadband link and I'm sure some of the meetings
could be done over that. At least thats what the marketing puff would
have you believe, however I do have my doubts about how effective "net
meetings" are in reality.

Newcastle is commutable from this bit of Cumbria, it's only an hour
away. B-)

If your are signed on for the "dole" there is plenty of free
training/retraining stuff available if you ask and dig a bit. My
dealings with the DHSS recently were pretty good, if your obviously an
intelligent person willing to help themselves and put some effort in
you get a much better response from the DHSS staff than someone
scrounger who is only there so their Giro doesn't get stopped.

Hi Tony

Well, that's really tough. It's hard to make a living in Cumbria. Anyway, I
can't offer you a job, but I can offer you an invitation to our forthcoming
boink - wouldn't you just love to meet jpinny & johnny?

Thanks for that Dave, I found that even on contract work, most people
just couldn't get their head around the working from home thing, its
also a pain in the but hunting for work, I'm really looking for
stability at the minute :)
Ideally, moving to Carlisle and commuting to Newcastle, I've applied
for two interesting roles over there already :) I'm waiting to hear
from 5 jobs at the minute, all perfectly within my skillset :)

As for meetings over the net, I find that trying to explain something
technical to somebody who is not technical is often easier in person
with a pencil and paper, I also like the personal touch. I think we
all overuse technology and forget that we are human.

In the meantime, I'm retraining myself into VB.NET, I was going to
take an intnse MCAD course, but putting 3k on the credit card just
now doesn't seem like a brilliant idea - though it would be a great
course :)

cheers
