Then may I most respectfully suggest that you might wish to consider
thinking about the contents and possible effects of your posts before you
click "send".

For your information Andy Pratt has been hanging around on this newsgroup
(and probably several, if not many others) on and off for a goodly number of
years. I think that he is well aware of alt.test, but is also aware that on
the whole by it's very nature, this is one of the most tolerant and friendly
newsgroups there could possibly be, and that a single TEST post would not be
objected to by the majority of users.
Furthermore his post was clearly marked as O/T

I know that he is far too polite to take issue with the curt nature of your
post, and your clear implication that he had somehow transgressed by not
using a newsgroup dedicated to test posts. Whilst I am not afflicted with
the same severity of politeness, I endeavored to get my point across to you
in a somewhat jocular (and NOT deliberately offensive!) fashion in the hope
that you would perhaps realise that it could have caused him embarassment
and possibly even distress. I assumed (and I apologise unreservedly if I
misperceived your attitude) that as the nature of your post was so abrupt
and some might say tactless, I would not cause offence to your good self.

I am not deliberately attempting to provoke an argument with you, such is
not my nature. But I honestly felt on reading your response to Andy's test
post, and after your response to a comment by myself in an earlier thread,
that in all conscience I could not allow it to pass without comment. I tried
to a certain extent to take some of the sting from my words with the use of
a smiley . I regret to observe that you clearly saw this as further
provocation in that you also used one in your reply to me, though your's was
certainly not meant in the same spirit as my own.

I am aware that posts on usenet can occasionally be misunderstood and even
with the use of emoticons, misinterpreted. I am also aware that it may be
seen by some that I am trying to be a "net-cop" and somehow to police the
usage of this group. Such is not the case. I am all for an harmonious
co-existance with the rest of the world. It makes for a far less stressful
life!

I am further aware that the nature of usenet is such that in an unmoderated
group as this one is, there is absolutely no way anyone, however
well-meaning can censor posts by others, except by raising issues and hoping
that one's adversary will come round to one's own way of thinking. In
retrospect, perhaps it would have been better if I had been a little more
blunt in my response to your implied condemnation of Andy, but once again,
that is not my nature.

So in summary:

Yes, I took umbrage at the tone of some of your posts.

No, I did not intend to be personally offensive.

Yes, you and anyone else has the right to say whatever you wish in this
forum so long as it is "legal".

Yes, anyone has the right to disagree with the content or tone of any post
by you, me or others.

and No, I am not looking for a battle, merely to stimulate a bit of healthy
discussion , cos it's getting rather dry and boring here of late :-)

If you find my posts as offensive as you imply, please feel free to killfile
me, I will not be offended, and then you will not have to subject yourself
to my all too often in(s)ane ramblings.

Cheers

Hehe, nicely put and very polite too!

And yes, Andy, I too saw your test - you could have said "hello" instead
of test and maybe that would have been better :-p <----- for the
emoticonally challenged, this is me sticking my tongue out at Andy as
it's a joke, OK?
