Georgian Fair report
Well, I spent all day Saturday wandering around Cockermouth in the pouring
rain, wearing a rather chilly Georgian costume and playing for the morris
dancers, and I didn't see any of you! Where were you all? Huddling beside a
warm fire watching the Royal wedding? Tch tch.
It was good fun, despite getting drenched. Loads of people braved the
elements and seemed to be enjoying themselves, and it was wonderful
observing all the different takes on what might constitute Georgian costume.
(Some looked more Victorian than Georgian to me, but at least they'd made
some sort of effort.) Belfagan danced outside Wordsworth House, at the
United Reform Church, in the Main Street and at Jennings Brewery, and they
even dragged me in to dance with them at one point - look what you missed!
Our Playford Ball the night before at the Globe Hotel was a sell-out, and a
resounding success. We had people arriving dressed in costumes of all sorts,
from a couple of Ladies Of The Night to a troop of drunken Redcoats. Most of
them danced, and everyone looked happy.
On Saturday night I played in the more serious concert at All Saints Church
with Piping Hot Recorders, and if you missed our rendition of Leopold
Mozart's Toy Symphony with the help of members of Nova Cantica on the toy
instruments, you missed a rare pleasure. The choirs were good too.
Dog! I'm glad to get out of that corset, though!

Now, why did I think the Fair was the weekend of the Boink? Oh, well. I
was thinking of coming as a visitor from the Rebellious New World
Colonies (A loyalist, of course, from Long Island, among the last to
declare for independence. Things might be a lot better for folks round
here if the leadership of state wasn't open to any blithering idiot
with enough money and mendacity.)I might have escaped the wearing of
Stays by adopting the comfortable habit of the Natives. I'm surprised
you were cold, with all the flannel petticoats.
Was Leopold Wolfie's son?

That was probably my fault. Ally told me she had something on on
the 23rd. I probably assumed it was the fair as she was going on
and on and on about the costumes around the same time.
48 hours till I leave for the sunny English south coast.

Aha! Yes, the 23rd is when I'll be in Newcastle, with a load of other morris
sides, all morrissing our little clogs off. If it had been the weekend of
the Georgian Fair I'd just have got you all tickets for the ball, and had
our boink there.

Oh goodness - and we haven't got a venue yet! Argh!
