In Outlook Express, Tools, Options, Maintenance, I've got "delete news
messages 5 days after being downloaded" -- but it doesn't do it, thats why
I've got loads of messages still showing.!!

Re: Even Odder!
try . . View / Current View / Hide read messages

this should hide any message you have already read

Glad its not just me!
I've resorted to highlighting the old messages then deleting them.
I too think that if I just "hide read messages" they'll keep on building up
but hidden!

Re: Even Odder!
Or view > current view > customise current view > click on 'where the message was sent more than days ago', you can select the number of days you want to download.

Why not switch to a "proper" newsreader, such as Forte Free Agent?

I use OE with XP and if I do "edit>catchup" it clears the lot, backlog and all :))

Re: Even Odder!
If you do catch up it marks all messages current, including those not even
downloaded from your news server (at the time you do it) as read. If you
want to delete all the messages you have downloaded, you would have to do

tools, options, maintenance, cleanup now..then click on Remove messages
(This will deleted all archived messages for your newsgroups), if you then
click on compact, it will tidy up the files and recover the disk space these
messages were using.

cheers
