Lovely oak
Hi Group
I'm just about to lay 22 sq mtr of solid oak flooring and my plan was to
secret nail through the existing floorboard (which i'm laying on top of (not
literally at this moment!)) into the joist. However, i've just read that
the 6 inch t and g boards in oak have a tendency to cup especially when
secret nailed? Has anyone got any advice as to whether they would secret
nail, conventional nail or screw this size and type of flooring., and with
what type i.e. ring shanked nails??
Also, half of the room is weyrock t and g chipboard does this affect the
type of fixing I should use?
For the record I am not intending on gluing whatsoever!
cheers group

Re: Lovely oak
I laid a 7m x 3m solid oak floor last year - It was a laminate type floating
floor, glued tongue and groove, so not the same as you are proposing but
still pretty solid 13mm oak.
I thought it worth mentioning the extent of the contraction and shrinkage
which has happened over the year, due presumably to central heating, etc.
over the 7m length I reckon I've lost 25mm and am now looking at having to
put bigger mouse moulding round the edges and do some sort of repair to a
parting of the glued wood in the middle - probably by cutting a gap and
putting a step over expansion gap in the middle, not pretty but not too bad
I hope.
The point is that even by nailing your floor there may be some attempts by
the wood to contract and shrink - so give as much time as possible for the
wood to acclimatise to your house and make sure you store it in the
recommended way whilst that happens. When you do fit it make sure these
joints are banged up real tight.
Good luck.
