Drainage
Dear All
Our drainage has blocked and it is very serious. For the past half year, we
have already asked plumbers to clear the blockage, and they used rods and
took them 2 hours to do the job. However, the problem has recurred from time
to time, and now, it is a complete blockage. This time, we asked another one
to check and he suspects that the drainage has been damaged and he would
like to seek a second opinion.
If the drainage has been damaged, what kind of implication is it? What kind
of remedial measures should we take? Your suggestions are most welcome.

A clue as to what sort of "drainage" is involved might give them a
sporting chance of guessing something useful on your problem might
help.
Plastic internal pipes, soil pipe, soak away, main underground
facilities, manholes??

Re: Drainage
Last time, the plumber had to uncover the mains outside the house to do the
plumbing. It is whenever we do washing, it is overthrown outside and the
water cannot go out.

Re: Drainage
What did this plumber actually do to the drains? Has this problem only
occurred since this work? Have you got a manhole nearby? Is the block before
or after the manhole?
Anyway, if you have a rough idea where the blockage is, then the only thing
to do is to dig out the main drain. Once you've discovered where the problem
is (collapsed drain etc), you need to replace the problem area. If you've
got plastic, it's more straightforward, but even if you've got ceramic, it's
easy to replace with plastic and get connectors to connect with the ceramic.
If you've got a Wickes near you they do an underground drainage help sheet
and sell most of the bits you'll need.
It's physically a hard and messy job to do the digging, but fixing them is
relatively straightforward. All the drainage people like Dynarod, do not
want to expend any effort in digging so use their water jet equiment to
blast any blockage, which can clear a way through even if your drain is
collapsed, but then eventually it just blocks up again. There is no attept
to find out WHY the drain is blocked. CC surveying sounds good but they
charge a load for it. It would be better if they did that as standard before
doing anything else.
Anyway, having started doing a bit myself a few years ago, I now realise the
hard bit is the digging and if you do it properly, it's easy to make a good
job of it.
