Congleton
Hi Folks

Will be staying in Congleton at the weekend. Other than the Beartown Tap are
there any other recommendations? Any ideas for food?

Any advice will be much appreciated.

Thanks

Hi all

The Bull opposite end of town (10 mins walk) from the Tap, for a range of ex
Hyde's + food.

Ex curry house in between the two pubs.

Don't bother with the Wharf (GBG)

Not exactly in Congleton, but the Swettenham Arms, Swettenham Village,
off the main Congleton-Holmes Chapel road, is first-class for food and
always has 3 or 4 good beers (including Beartown) on as well. Booking
advised, especially for Sunday lunch.

You'll need to arrange a second mortgage first, though :-(

Quite. But it is worth it. IMO.

Historical note. This was once one of the pubs owned by Clive Winkle of the
Saxon Cross Brewery, Buxton. It was excellent beer, rather reminiscent of
Sam Smiths from memory. The brewery closed after a rat infestation.
Apparently this didn't do wonders for beer sales. Other pubs he owned at the
time were the Mow Cop and the Plough in Eaton near Congleton.

The Swettenham Arms is also reputed to have one of the largest pub car parks
in the country! It was also the very first pub I recommended for the Good
Pub Guide over 20 years ago

On the subject of Congleton, Khean do some excellent beers as well. No idea
which pubs around Congleton sell them though - sorry.

Sorry about the attachment. I originally attempted to send it using
individual.net but got a "subscription expired" error, so I cut and pasted
it into another message.

Come back NTL, all is forgiven...
