Box Players
Going back a few decades here. Anyone remember the 'must' Saturday
nights in the pubs that boasted a Box Player.?
Last shout was at 9.50 pm and we all made our orderly way to the bus
stops taking us home.
The more wealthy of course ventured into the chip shops for a fish
supper and took a cab home.
Anyone have memories of these bygone days.?

Inferring from "Going back a few decades here," it sounds like an early
jukebox, does it not?

Kind of, except you 'fed' the box player pints instead of feeding
coins. :)

There was one in the "Chancellor" off Byres Road in Glasgow (1970's). He
had a large repertoire - everything from pop, to hoochter teuchter and
Captain Pugwash. I used to go there with the grilf for a night-cap
after a curry on a Friday. They sold 1/4 gills, none of this namby pamby
1/5 or 1/6 stuff. And as you say, tucked up in bed by 10-30.

What more could a young man want - strong drink taken, tummy full of
curry and a girlf tucked up by 10.30. Church early next morning?

The nearest hotel or club in those days! Anyone remember the 'bona
fide' traveller loophole that allowed travellers to buy drink on a
Sunday if they declared themselves travellers by signing the
'book'.?
I remember one hotel in Dalkieth (The Harrow)?) having at least a
dozen Marco Polo's visiting on the same day.! :-)
Plus a string of John Waynes and Roy Rogers. :-)
