Help
Hello,
My name is Genny, and I have a few quick questions. I was wondering if
anyone would like to give me some information about Edinburgh. I found
out a couple weeks ago that I might be moving to Edinburgh from the
United States. I was wondering if any of you might have useful
information about the are. If any of you are or have lived there you
would be a life saver. I'm also quite upset about the whole thing, and
very distressed. So, if any of you have moved alot and could give me
some advice as to how to go about this move that would be
wonderful.Thank you.

1. It's not blue
2. The number five is illegal on Fridays
3. No one who suffers from migraines is allowed to vote in the council
elections
4. The city is built on seven rivers
5. The oldest building in Edinburgh was built in 1912
6. The legal age for drinking is twelve

Hey Marc,
Thanks for the pointers, they made me laugh. The reason i'm so upset is
because I'm a senior in High school, which means that I only have one
year left untill I go to a university and I wanted to stay here.
However the bigger reason is because of the friends I have here. I know
that Edinburgh has alot to offer and the fact that I want to major in
the arts is also another big pull for Edinburgh I'm just kind of
nervous. Even though I would only be staying in Scottland for one year,
I would have to make quick new friends and then say goodbye again to
the friends I had made there. I don't plan on going to a university
there, and even though the travel opporitunities are spectacular, I
just don't have my whole heart into it. I'mnot making the least bit of
sense am I? Well if I'm not then thanks for the funny pointers and If I
am please give me some reassurance that I making the right decision.
Thanks,
Genny

Hi Genny,
I think it's perfectly understandable to have second thoughts about a move
like that. But I think you will probably ending up enjoying it a lot. One
year may seem like a lot, but once it's over you'll think "what? already? it
wasn't long at all".
I'm talking from my own experience and what I've seen around me, and I don't
think you should worry much about taking a year before going to university.
In fact, why not taking that year as time to invest in learning more about
what you like, what you don't, possibilities... etc? I was in a rush to go
to university, and now I think I'd have been better off if I had taken some
time off to think. I ended up doing 3 years of an engineering degree (6-year
course), and then I dropped it, and went into biology (and eventually got my
PhD, back in '99). No need to rush :-)
In my opinion, having the opportunity to spend a year in a different
country, with different people, learning about new things that are
unfamiliar, is a great opportunity.
You won't lose your friends at home (and these days staying in touch is so
easy, with email, cheap phone calls -especially to USA-) and you'll met new
friends in Edinburgh. I have lived in a few places in Britain, and Edinburgh
is my favourite. Despite the weather :-) it is a great city to live in. Not
too small, not too big, lots to do, lots to see. And if you manage to travel
a little around Scotland, it's beautiful.
Don't be afraid... When I left Spain, at 21, I was a bit like "hmmm, what am
I doing??? am I crazy???" and I arrived in London, then went to university
in Norwich... and those were some of my best times ever. It was difficult at
times, missing your closest friends that you left far away, missing the life
I had in Madrid... but those moments don't last long, and I had a lot of fun
learning about a different culture, meeting new people, seeing new places...
Don't think about it... just embrace the idea, and jump into it! When you go
back home, you'll have a much broader outlook and understanding of life in
general, things that you don't really learn at university... okay, and I'll
stop now because I sound like I'm preaching!!! :-)

I'm glad if it helped a bit.
I hope you lose your fears and have a great time in Scotland. Just be
careful of one thing: you may grow to like it here too much!!! ;-) (not
kidding, I've met a few people who came, left... and just had to return
again :-) Including my girlfriend, who happens to be from Michigan...
