Your direct link wasn't working , but the offer is valid if you go direct to
the dell site.

No monitor but for basic home use it's more than capable of doing the job

goto dell.co.uk
press small business
press shop by evalue code
enter 305 D11111

then change support to 90 day c&r

Nice one.

It's a long time since I've seen this discussed and can't remember any
conclusions. What is the difference to an ordinary consumer if they order
through small business section? Are any consumer rights lost etc?

SB orders seem to elicit a lot more junk mail.

Yes, you lose your DSR rights,
i.e you can no longer "try before you buy" and return for a refund
at their cost within 28 days

The DSR only applies business->consumer, not b2b.

Other than that, no real difference.

It doesn't actually require you to be a business to order though , so as
lons as you can prove that you are a private consumer surely the DSR still
applies (not that I'd want to take it back)

Thanks to the OP - put in the 2.8Ghz processor for 20 and the lot comes to
less than 200. Already got a screen; already got a DVD writer in my "old"
PC, so a good result all round.

Has this MB got a AGP slot?
Is it worth upgrading the graphic card to play decent games
or will the CPU bottleneck it?

I was thinking along the lines of a RADEON 9800Pro

You posted the wrong link, but as you get no monitor, DVD drive etc, you
could build it yourself. A 2.53GHz Celeron isn't exactly fast, so don't use
it for music, or even video applications.

Why not just buy a decent motherboard and CPU for your old case and use the
existing bits and pieces. Save yourself a fortune.
You can get decent Athlon 3GHz processors or a 3GHz P4.
Don't just buy it because it appears "cheap", look about first.

I seem to be able to get more out a 900mhz Duron than some people can get
out of 2.* Celeron :-)

I`ll go along with that line of thinking - I ran an old program called
Super Pi (works out the value of pi to several million places) and
compared my aging AMD Athlon XP2000 (1.6Ghz) to my wifes' newer 2.4Ghz
Celery Dell.

My machine *trounced* the Dell by a factor of about 2 (i.e. my "old" CPU
was twice as fast at chucking the data around) - despite me still using
SDRAM rather than DDR.

Bear in mind this program was written back in win3.xx days, and you`ll
realise it isn`t tailored to take advantage of more specialised
instruction sets like SSE or SSE2, it just plods along using generic
code.

Celerons really aren`t impressive at all in my experience.

....and I have recently been reading how much better they are now, in
comparison to similarly clocked P4s and just earlier today was noting how a
2GHz Celeron was benchmarked better than my XP2100 in, coincidentally, an
mp3 encoding test.

I suppose it may be application dependent but it's hard to know what to
believe.

I don't suppose ther could be a bottleneck you are unaware of?

However, in the main I find generalisations like marks well worth ignoring.

Intel chips have traditionally had a better maths unit in them, but for
general computational clout they seem to lag behind AMD - especially the
cheaper Celerons. AMD chips do more instructions per cycle than the
Intel line, so although the "headline" speed may be higher for Intel,
the actual productivity rate is often better on an AMD for non-maths-
intensive work.

You'll note Intel try to make use of this to skew benchmarks in their
favour - they push encoding mp3 or video as far as possible because
that's often the only place they have an advantage.

Quite true. My 450MHz PIII laptop is more than capable of music and video.

hey i still have a 133Mhz and a Celeron 1400 (1.2Mhz) it plays music and
video no problem.

Even watch DVD's, even good at photo editing.......... personally i wouldnt
buy it for myself but im sure its a good system for someone who prefer a
branded name.

The reality is that encoding mp3s and video are probably the only
applications where the user will notice the difference anyway.
Unless you play high end game that is and even then the graphics card makes
more difference.
Even the slowest 1G P3 is fast enough for most other things.

Quite agree - and last year I did just that, and my home PC absolutely
flies for an outlay of around £300. But the kit in the existing case
of my work PC is all about 4 years old now; I've already extended the
life by shoving in a gigabyte of Ram and an Athlon XP 2200 (which was
the fastest that would fit); and there are still lots of times where I
seem to be processing at a snail's pace. The limiting factor here is
the speed of my elderley hard disk, graphics card and so on. This way,
I get a licensed copy of XP (ahem) and kit that should all run at a
speed that matches the processor and ram. I got one of the £186 Dell's
last year, and as a workstation, it's proved ideal.

That's bullshit, where did you read a celeron could beat a P4? Celerons are

He doesn't say that they beat a P4 , just that they are better than they
used to be which is true.

Celerons aren't stunning but we are talking about a 175 quid complete PC
including a legitimate OS and they are perfectly good in that context

Where did you read it? Anyone reading such a thing would surely believe they
were mistaken, except you. ;)

Are you sure? you can buy both a PIII 1.4 or a Celeron 3.06 at half the
price but you prefer the PIII? Well it's your money.

To illustrate what you missed, a P4 2.8 may have a 20% advantage over
Celeron 2.8 but a PIII 1.2 may have a 30% advantage over a Celeron 1.2.

When it comes to music and video encoding where the advantage between later
models may be around 0% and 20% respectively and then take into account the
price premium then the Celeron really does seem worth considering and marks
and your generalisations don't look so well informed.

Of course you must consider that "performance is relative" and "performance
is application specific" before making a decision also that the CPU may not
be the bottleneck in many ill configured systems.

I have a couple of friends who are very happy with their P4 from Dell that
many of us picked up for 165 some time ago but when I looked at the
performance I noted the 256MB ram created such a bottleneck that most of the
time it may aswell be a much lower clock speed Celeron.

I for instance have no interest in Celerons for myself but know plenty of
users for whom they are the true vfm option.
