Llangollen pubs
We're now counting down the days and very much looking forward to our week
on the Llangollen Canal. The plan (although subject to variation) is that
we'll eat on board some evenings and search out a suitable pub for others.

As it's been a while since I last boated the Llangollen, the canalside pubs
I recall as being good for food, beer and also child friendly, may not be so
any longer. Any comments - in particular on recent visits - would be very
welcome on the following or, indeed, any further recommendations in between
Wrenbury and Llangollen itself.

Cotton Arms (Wrenbury)
Dusty Miller (Wrenbury)
Narrowboat Inn (near Maestermyn boatyard)
Poacher's Pocket (Chirk Bank)
The Telford (Trevor Wharf)
Sun Trevor (Llangollen-ish)

Also, last time I passed on the A5, the former Black Lion (at Rhoswiel?)
appeared to have undergone a remarkable transformation (now called Lion
Quays?). Again, comments appreciated.

The current GBG lists 3 pubs in Llagollen - Sun, Wynnstay and Cornmill.
Don't forget the Willymoor Lock as well!

Re: Llangollen pubs
Cotton and Dusty both good pubs for meals, Dusty the more expensive,
but right at canalside and very smart building with stacks of
character.
Narrowboat is attached to Maestermyn Marina, good wholesome food in
family run pub.
Poachers is member of 'eatery' chain, fast service, good food, but
lacks the personal touch.
Telford is a small, busy pub that's a blend of being a local, mixed
with being a canal side pub for visitors. Good food and reasonable
prices.
Sun Trevor is out in the country, between Llangollen and Trevor. Large
pub just a minute's walk off the cut. Good food and good prices.
Lion Quays is very stylish. It's about 45 minutes above New Marton top
lock. Their own quay right outside, good gardens and bags of character
in the restaurant. Great food, but a little pricier than the other
local pubs/restaurants; which is fair enough, given the style of the
place.

You've not mentioned the Wagonners, but it's well worth a visit. It's
at Platt Lane. Can't remember the bridge number, but it's about a mile
or two east of the junction with the Prees Branch (Whixall marina), at
the eastern end of the long straight stretch. Moorings alongside the
banks either side of the bridge. The pub is just a couple of minutes
walk from the cut and the meals are very good and reasonably priced.

From our 1999 log.........
<<
The chosen stopping place was just above Bridge No 11. The chosen pub for
the night was the slightly eccentric and very good "Jack Myton Inn". This
large establishment was off the beaten track and was a true inn. We all
watched TV in the comfortable lounge drinking an excellent pint of Timothy
Taylors Landlord, one of Neil's favorite beers. Eventually we were called to
our booked table in a charming Spanish feel restaurant. We had an excellent
"European" flavor, reasonably price meal. It is a shame this excellent spot
did not seem that highly patronised, but then it was mid week.

>>

We have visited it since, prob not as good, but still did Timmy Taylors
Landlord.

We have always found Llangollen dreadful, the Bridge Inn?? (pub by the
bridge!) is as good as any.

We stopped there for a night on our way to Llangollen this summer.

The mooring is quite handy except that we are trying to maintain our dogs'
impression that it is Strictly Forbidden to jump off the bows of the boat -
and as the jetties are shorter than the boat we had to be stern-in. The
trouble is they face downstream and the next morning it was VERY difficult
to turn upstream again.

We expected the food to be something special, and were rather disappointed
that it was very ordinary (and they got the order wrong).

Indeedy, again from our 1999 log
<<
We moored a bit before Platt Lane Bridge No 43 on some serious piling,
non-towpath side and well afloat. This was because we noticed on the way up
that boats moored on the towpath near the bridge were having to use their
gang planks. The spot we chose was beside a small service lane to serve the
odd smallholdings along this bank. We had stopped at 7.50am and were soon
walking the half mile to the pub. This was another totally remote excellent
unspoilt establishment. Even though we had the kids with us, we stayed until
nearly closing time.

But you must pre book. Completely full and we were turned away at 7pm on a
Wed evening. Annoying when we had got specialy smartened up to go somewhere
which appeared very nice.
Llangollen on a Saturday evening completely full. The only place which could
fit us in was the Chinese - which actualy turned out very good. Good tasty
food, very efficient and very pleasent service.
Pity our style of boating does not make pre booking easy.

Re: Llangollen pubs
Ignore this remark - memory going. It is the "Navigation" further on at the
present end of the canal, which is closed on Mondays. Sorry!
A very nice quiet mooring though just a few hundred yards past the pub and
a nice walk on along the still to be restored towpath.

Used to be a good pub.
Pop in there for a couple of pints of your favourite tipple now and you will

As locals we're fairly familiar with most pubs from Ellesmere to Llangollen.

In Ellesmere try the Black Lion for food (but not the beer), or if it's
a nice local pub with real ale you're after then it has to be the White
Hart on Birch Road (just down from Blackwater Meadow Marina), you're
bound to meet some local boaters in there (also they do an excellent
Sunday lunch - the only time thay have food available, booking advisable).

Next up the Narrowboat, more of a resturant than a pub, mooring can be a
pain, we give it a wide birth.

Jack Mytton Inn, if you can put up with the rather quirky landlord, then
you do get good food and good real ale. A favourite of ours.

Lion Quays, good to sit outside on a summer's afternoon, otherwise
pricey and gloomy inside.

Poachers Pocket, OK if you've got kids, play area outside.

Bridge Inn, recently changed hands, not tried it since.

Chirk Marina and golf club, if you can get in past the BP boats the
food's reasonable here.

Aqueduct Inn Froncysyllte, just up the hill past the lift bridge. Our
local, good food (excellent Sunday roast) and a couple of real ales.
Tell them we sent you and perhaps we'll get a free pint off the landlord !!

Telford Inn Trevor, eaten here once. It was OK, but sadly the ale wasn't.

Sun Trevor. Usually good food and beer, smashing views down the valley.

Llangollen. The Corn Mill is popular and pricey, but it's just the same
as other pubs owned by this chain. Go to the Wynnstay (over the river
bridge, turn left by Royal, and it's a few hundred yards on your right).
Run by three generations of the same family. Excellent food, real ale
and a cracking log fire. Our favourite Llan pub.

Sun Inn, carry on past the Wynnstay to the junction with the A5. Here
you'll find the Sun, excellent ales and live music (from folk to rock)
on several nights. Good atmosphere.
