Paid Beaters
What's the going rate for a days beating (6-8 shoots, 9am 'till dusk)?
I'm in North West Norfolk, we got 22 per day from a couple of different
estates last year - don't know if its going up this year???!!! I don't do
it for the cash mind you, but I am curious about the 'minimum wage'
legislation and 'employment' legislation, only for my own curiosity!

On a shoot where Myself & two of my lads have been beating for the last
3 years, the keeper has been told that he will only be able to pay for
14 beaters (18). If there are more than 14 the under 16s will not be
paid!
This is a raise from last year of 2! Big deal!!
As I see it you are being contracted to beat for a fixed sum not an
hourly rate so min wage doesn't apply. BUT other bits of employment law
do apply ie H&S considerations etc.

Do you at least get some birds thrown in? As a [once so far, booked again
this year] shooter I had been led to believe this was one of the reasons I
had paid a fortune to shoot 15 birds but could only take 2 or 3 home...

I should think myself lucky then - forgot to mention that we get lunch too
(well, soup, sarnies & a tin of beer)!
