Bath vs shower
With all this talk recently about bathroom fittings, I'm reminded of
something I heard on the radio the other day. One of these surveys done by
people who really should find something better to do with their time found
that women in general prefer to take a bath, while men prefer showers.
Once again, I go against the norm as I prefer a shower. Shall we do a
mini-survey on uklc? What do you prefer, people? A bath or a shower?

Its really all to do with time. I shower every day in the morning, I don't
have the time to run a bath, wallow in it, dry, shave. eat and be at work 23
miles away before 7 am. I probably take two or three baths a year usually
after the semi annual clean up in the garden when all the msucles ache.

I prefer to shower every morning. If I have time in the evenings or if I
don't feel well I take a nice long bath. More for relaxation.

It's ages since I had a bath. It coincides with the advent of a decent
shower.
I never have a bath in the summer.
I now find that a shower with some lavender, chamomile and ylang ylang
is just as relaxing and gets me off to bed a bit sooner.

Shower every time, Ally. We are fortunate in having two bathroom. A shower
room upstairs - the one that is being refitted - and a bathroom downstairs.
We both shower at least every morning but after a hard day's gardening we do
occasionally bath for the therapeutic effect on overtired muscles.
The downstairs bathroom has all the old Victorian fittings. A huge cast
iron, rolled top, bath with ball & claw feet, a wash basin almost big enough
to bath in and a loo with the water cystern up above on a lead pipe.
Best of both worlds.

Re: Bath vs shower
So it seems everybody prefers a shower - male or female. Baths are only used
either for relaxation or therapeutic reasons. Seems we're in agreement on
something!
I actually enjoy showering. There's something wonderful about the feeling of
hot water running down your body. I find it much more sensual than lying in
a pool of warm dirty water. When I do have a bath, (like when I'm staying
with friends or something) I feel I need a shower afterwards, and sometimes
rinse myself all over with the hair washing hose if they've got one.

That sounds wonderful. Dim lights and candles awww... The house I grew up

I'd like a shower but we only have a bath... One day, along with all
the other things that need doing here, we *will* get a shower.
I *always* shower when not at home, something about getting into a
container full of water that other unknowns have used in the past. If
there is no shower I'll wash using the basin.
Timing, not being a morning person, it's just a wash down then whilst
shaving. I find a shower after the day very refreshing for the
evening.

Yes, I'd agree with you there. Since we work from home, we don't need to go
out to work all smart and clean: we just get on with our work at home and
try to look respectable enough if the occasional customer turns up. It's the
end of the day when I tend to feel like a shower, rather than the
beginning - especially if I'm going out somewhere later on.

I should do - I bet they're brilliant at getting mud and sand out of the
dog's fur too. The shower makes an unholy mess... ;)
I have post-viral fibromyalgia syndrome and the power-shower is great for
pummelling (sp) the 'trigger points' but sometimes overdoing it (it is an
'addictive' sensation) can cause intense fatigue. How would I get to try a

I've seen them at Hayes in Ambleside but never actually seen anyone using
one. Maybe I should break the mould.... figuratively speaking. Wrong side

I've been in a spa bath, outside, on Christmas day. Mind you it was in
Bahrain...
If you do go for one make sure that the company knows how to deliver
it and is well insured:

I'd need an indoor one in the corner of the bathroom. Couldn't get a crane
that size down our narrow street and there's only footpath access at the

If I had enough water pressure, a shower in the morning would be good!
Mostly a bath in the evening, for relaxation.

My day brightened up eventually. I cheered up so much in fact
that I decided to tackle the tax audit. Which was then
interrupted by a call from a client who wanted to know something
about a job I did in 1996. I can't remember what I had for
breakfast. Anyway, the pharmacy then called to say three of my
prescriptions have zero refills (I'm completely out BTW) and one
of them was my blood pressure med. I've just been summonded to
drive my son across the city to a hockey practice that just
magically appeared out of nowhere onto the schedule.
Another day, another few grey hairs... which promptly fell out.

I know from running our own business several years ago, that when one
felt energised and ready, that was the time to tackle the VAT or the
Corporation Tax. We were a small business, so there wasn't a large
volume of work, but it was the thought of getting those figures right,
and the potential of getting them wrong which made it stressful. There
was always the promise of a nice glass of Merlot at the end of the
day.... It was best to tackle the buggers when you thought you could win...

This is the problem, isn't it? We girls can wear more or less anything from
one end of the male-female spectrum to the other, and get away with it, but
if a man tries the same thing....

We're having another dark, rainy day with the chance of wet
snow. It was just three weeks ago it was still 25C.

I should point out that it is my 84 year-old recently widowed
mother who is being audited. She's anxiety-ridden, chronically
ill and incapable of understanding her financial affairs. So I
haven't mentioned to her she is being audited. The tax year
being audited includes the year my father died of cancer. So
naturally the government wants a full accounting of - you
guessed it - their medical receipts! Can you imagine how well
two eighty-something people in failing health kept their
records? There's millions of them stored in every nook and
cranny of their files and cupboards and boxes and dresser
drawers and...
What is it you can remember from 1996?
I may be young-ish, but I am a medical marvel. I spend $800 a
month on meds to stay alive (80% reimbursed by insurance). And
yes, stress makes it all worse. No doubt about it.
But I'm a happy-go-lucky guy none the less, as I pointed out to
Rex.

Blimey. Yes, I do understand. Been there, done that (except for the tax
audit, but all the rest of the lost documents, hidden papers, the lot...
relatives with Alzheimers, Parkinsons....you name it... ) You have my
deepest sympathy in a horrible task.

I knew that would get you! That's the year we moved to Cumbria. I remember a
*lot* about that event. Oh yes... The rest of the year, however, is a blur.

Oh well, at least it seems to be working, as you certainly *look* fit and
healthy and, yes, happy-go-lucky.

He arrived 6:45 pm in one piece, high on adrenalin from concentration,
picked me up and drove me to a meeting. We just got back now, dinner in the
car, sausages in potato cakes bought at a petrol station and with a
chocolate bar for dessert. I love it when he takes me out to dinner.

Aw, give it away. Go buy yourself something that flatters you now. Life is

I have three outfits that I like to call my power suits. They are reserved
for board meetings and when I have to plead my case in front of a city
council. That isn't that often. My patients would think I'd come to take
something away if I showed up like that at their doorstep. You're right.
It would scare 'em. For me it's either scrubs or jeans/khakis and casual
shirt. Wore my Rolling Stones t-shirt today. Think they would get a kick
out of the big green kickers and wellies....

No, no, you see, you've already wasted precious reading time by counting the
sentence! You could have read the whole thing in the time you counted up to
1.

I'm going to Norway first. And then possibly Italy as I have a friend there
who won't come over here. Another friend and I are thinking of turning up on
her doorstep in Italy (we all went to school together) and dragging her off
for a wild girly weekend in Rome or something. Don't know if such a plan
will ever get off the ground, but it's a great idea, isn't it?

Three coins in the fountain
Each one seeking happiness
Thrown by three hopeful lovers
Which one will the fountain bless
Memories in the corner of my mind, Edith.

This is just spookey. We're going to Italy in the new year too.
First NYC and now Italy. I think you have our home bugged!

Your's are merely whims compared to my wife's to do list of
places to go. The list has existed for a long time but the money
is now there and the kids are at an age where they can either
come along or stay home.

Whims are good. I like whims. Better than concrete plans. And we're
definitley going to Norway, something that may have started as a whim, but
has now grown some solid foundations.

Norway is a lot like parts of Canada: without the sun intensity.
I like planning a trip. Makes me nervous if I don't know where
I'm going to sleep at night. And with the high cost of
travelling, I don't like to leave 'having a good time' to
chance. Of course 'having a good time' means different things to
different people.
Have fun when you go.

Ah. OK. So when I go to Norway I'll get an idea of what Canada's like -
i.e., like Norway but brighter. And they speak English.

Having a good time tends to mean spending as little money as possible while
spending as much time as we can with good friends in interesting
surroundings on this trip, I suspect. An exceptionally good friend here in
Cumbria has even offered to drive us to Prestwick when we go, and come and
pick us up when we return, so we won't be having to pay for car parking at
the airport.
But now they're talking about a really hard winter coming up, and I need to
drive to Edinburgh in December... any tips for driving on bad roads from you
lot in the frozen north?

Why not travell from Newcastle to Torp? Drive east instead of north. It's a
new route.

Some parts. Coastal Newfoundland and coastal Norway for example.

Says a lot about the good people of Cumbria.

Yeah. Stay home until the roads are clean and dry again. You
don't have the road clearing capabilities we do.

May a good time follow you wherever you go.
