and it's Good bye from him
I'll be lighting four candles tonight, or should it be fork handles.

You know when I heard that sad news this morning I thought just the
same thing. Some one had misquoted fork 'andles in another group just
last night as well.

Greatly missed in this household too.
I think that you will find that 4 candles was written by my old English
teacher and Script associate Peter Vincent :-)

Yes, he was a true comic genius. He had a unique gift for spinning
humour out of the English language.

In the authorised biography of Ronnie Barker, by Bob McCabe, Barker is
quoted is having written the "Fork 'andles" sketch in his guise of Gerald
WIley.

I am happy to leave the credit with Mr B then.
Certainly the script for that show was written by RB (as GW) and PeteV.
There were contributions from at least a 12 others too. Many household
names. They fed each other constantly which is one reason why they
collectively produced such terrific entertainment. P Vincent was playing
with his fork (and any number of similar utensils) a number of years before
that show was written.
Ronnie Barker and his writing guise Gerald Wiley certainly made my
world a happier place to live in.

And they managed to do so for years by being naughty but not filthy, and not
seeking approval by the number of times they could fit the "F" word in,
either! I don`t think anyone has made me laugh as much as they did -
especially in their musical sketches (brass band, etc.)

Did you laugh at all the jokes and sketches?
Even the ones written but the Monty Pythons guys?
The Goodies? The Dave Allen writers?
The Ronnie Barker experience was a meeting of
The truly Greatest writers and delivered by a consummate performer.

Indeed. The humour was excellent. Not a swear word in hearing, and those
sketches were long, and generally shot in one, which says alot for their
acting skills. Not like in standup these days, where there always seems to
be great deal of "thinking" time between gags.
(Although the Irish guy on Jack Dee's show last week was supurb.)
