Lillyhall retards...
I am from Manchester but have connections in Workington and so travel
there fairly often. I never stop reading in the local press about the
number of road accidents and fatalities on the local A roads. The A66
towards and around the Lillyhall area seems to be well featured in the
fatalities list.
On Friday night i was travelling toward workington and had come off a
large roundabout (dont know the name!) and was going along in the
direction of the Lillyhall roundabout. Locals may know the area. There
is a junction to the right for Great clifton, the next after that on
the right is for Stainburn via the Moor Rd. The weather was grim and
it was very dark so i was travelling at about 40mph and looking out
for the Stainburn turn off. Behind me were two cars. I could see the
right turn sign to Stainburn in the distance and so checked behind, all
was well and signalled right. As I approached the right hand turn, the
retard behind me moved out and made to overtake me!. At the point
where i intended to turn right,he had only just passed me and i was
forced to go straight on to avoid an accident.
The quality of driving of some of the locals has to be seen to be
believed and it is no wonder there are so many tragedies. Most of them
wouldnt last a day on Manchesters' roads for they would either be cut
to ribbons or kill some unfortunate person. They are always in such a
great big hurry and what for? to save a minute or two-pathetic and
stupid.
My own driving record is exemplary. I have a full licence for
motorbikes and cars, have driven both for nearly 25 years accident free
and a clean licence. IMHO,it should be a condition of learning to
drive a car that you have first held a licene for a motorbike/scooter
for 6 months AND can domonstrate that you have used it regularly and
have passed a test on it.

Indeed, but I think your casting nasturtiums. There are eedjits in
Manchester as well, unfortunately... And as we say in the IAM, 'there is no

Don't know about it being compulsory, but it certainly helps. I had a moped
for while before I sat my car test, and it certainly gave you a different
view of other road users and their bad habits. (It would have been a proper
motorbike if I'd had a bit more money.... and I'd probably have killed
myself on it...)

In the "old days" of motorcycling when all you had to do was drive
round the block to get a pass certificate, things were not so good. I'm
sure the accident rate was much higher. I passed my test in that era
too but had the wit to realise that i was far from competent. There
used to be a national training outfit organised by the RAC./ACU which
provided further training for motorcyclists. I signed up for a course.
It ran for quite a few months each Sunday morning. We had further
training by qualified instructors, took to the roads for on going
training assessment and when i passed i went on to be an instructor
myself for a while. A properly trained and skilled motorcyclist will
have greater powers of observation and ongoing assessment of
situations. Its a matter of skill and survival. When these skills are
transferred to a car, they are generally better drivers. Well trained
motorcylists are taught a safe system of riding, maintaining an ongoing
safe zone around them whilst maintaining a constant vigilance and
checking regime. A lot of motorists dont look any further than the end
of their bonnets and deal with situations as they encounter them
rather than with anticipation and planning.
Again though,im not saying im perfect, just better than many and im not
saying all motorcylists are brilliant. Most dont bother with advanced
training, some are hopeless two wheeled terrorists and many are
needlessly killed because of this.
We used to have an old saying.
There are old bikers and bold bikers, but there are no old bold bikers.

Re: Lillyhall retards...
There are 3 things that aint so good among drivers.
1)Those who never look in the mirror to see what's going on behind them and
can't pull in and let a queue pass by.
2) Those who drive in the middle of the road toward the middle line and are
completely hopeless on a country road with no middle line to guide them.
Don't we learn to keep to our own side of the road in such circumstances. ?
3) People who are uncertain of the round about rules and need a little
reminder course, like me.

Or horse shit. Had a biker, coming the other way, do a very
interesting twitch about 10 yards in front of me when his wheels
touched some fresh horse shit. Stupid thing was that as I progressed I
past a trail of horse shit so it wasn't as is it was a surprise around

And very true. The worse ones are the "born again" bikers. The middle
aged successful men who can afford to buy a powerful sports bike and
try to recapture their youth.

Indeed.
One never hears of the responsible, good bikers who - no doubt - whizz up
and down Hartside upon arriving up from - or going down to - Devil's Bridge
or wherever... One hears plenty about the potential 'old, bold' bikers
though - usually a gruesome headline in the 'Herald'!
It'll be a bit like the TT on the way to your place, is it?

There are responsible bikers and TBH they are in the majority. They
just poottle along at 60mph, on the big Harleys or Honda Gold Wings,
enjoying the road, the ride and view.
It's the ones on the 750cc 150mph+ "sports" bikes that are the
problem. Doing stupid speeds round blind bends, wheels their side of
the line but most of the bike and them your side. Doing wheelies up
Front Street. Or simply the fing noise as the engine revs up to 10,000
rpm as they scream down the straighter sections at 100mph+. As they
race up or down between Natrass and Ashgill it's not so bad as it
doesn't last long, 30 seconds or so for the mile of road involved...
What pees me off is the noise from them along the Hartside Road
between the Cafe and Alston, it's just a constant scream that lasts
for minutes.
> It'll be a bit like the TT on the way to your place, is it?
Fortunately our house is not directly on one of the main routes but
close enough. During summer weekends you can tell if the weather is
nice by the noise from the bikes... B-(

Gees, it's nice up there, Dave. How far up are you? Are you past the cafe. I
noticed the chimney and roof of a farm down a little road on the left not
long after the beginning of the climb coming from south.
