Very busy, Edith. I have spent the morning concreting part of my drive.
Erica, bless her heart has mad lunch and one of her fabulous apple and
blackberry pies. I have just eaten a first warm slice with ice cream.
HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!
That was worth falling down a hole for.

heh heh. Having spent a lot of time recently thinking about computer
problems, my first image here was of you pouring concrete into your hard

You should fall down holes more often, luv. Tell me, if I fell down a hole,
d'yuh think Erica would...no, I suppose not. Not after the way I have
treated her, flirting with her husband an a'all thart. Oh well, never mind.
I'll just go back to my dry black bread, cabbage and water. Siiigh. I'm
awfully unhappy. I don't like you eating Ericas pie without me and with ice
cream on it too. You're blooming evil, you are. I hope your foot gets caught
in the cement. If I were Erica, I'd leave you, you, you Cement FOOTED PIE

It will become a hard drive, once the cement has set. What good would a soft

You keep all the fish heads and stick them into the pie crust so it looks
like the fish are looking up at the stars.

I remember seeing a beautiful little children's story animated on TV. It was
based in Mousehole and featured stargazey pie. As you rightly say the fish
heads stare up at the sky from the pie crust. Herrings, I think they are.
I've never tried it though.

Looks streets ahead of my old amstrad. Even the printer was a rattling type
of typwriter with a daisy wheel and a ribbon. When I went over to a PC with

Well, it's not really. It's about on a par with the old Sinclair Spectrum.
Steve happened to have an Oric-1 when everybody else had a Speccy (and I had
a Beeb), so when he got old enough to spend his money on silly things he
started collecting them and has now cornered the market in all things Oric.
The only people who can beat him are the French who went on improving the
machine when the rest of the world had long changed over to PCs. There's
still a select group of people, scattered about the world, who actually
write games for the Oric. I think they're sweet. ;-)
>Even the printer was a rattling type of typwriter with a daisy wheel and a
>ribbon.
My old Beeb didn't even have a printer or a disk drive. I used to wish I
could print things out, but since I couldn't, I spent my time learning BASIC
and making little characters run around the screen.
>When I went over to a PC with windows 95 I thought I was in heaven.
I started with DOS. I hated the idea of windows and resisted for years. I

I never did. I used a typewriter for doing my homework when I was at school.
I taught myself to touch-type one wet summer holiday when I was about 9 or
10, and I've never regretted it. Give me a pencil and I'll start drawing
cartoons and stuff and get sidetracked...

According to the song you need "seven different sorts of fish" though I
can't remember which ones. We had a holiday in St Just over 20 years ago,
and they had this wonderful fish shop with varieties of fish I'd never seen
or heard of. I wanted to stay long enough to try them all, but sadly we had
to go home before I managed it. Mousehole's nice. I've been there. Big tidal
harbour and fishermen's cottages.

Starrygazy Pie. (was Re: There was I)
Ha! Found it! (From 'Cornish Dialect and Folk Songs')
TOM BAWCOCK'S EVE
A merry plaace, you may believe,
was Mouzel 'pon Tom Bawcock's eve.
To be there then who wudn' wesh,
To sup o' sibm soorts o' fesh!
When morgy brath had clear'd the path,
comed lances for a fry,
and then us had a bit o' scad,
an' starry-gazy pie!
Next comed fair maids
bra' thusty jaades
as maade our oozles dry,
an' ling an' haake,
enough to maake
a raunin' shark to sigh!
As aich we'd clunk
A's health were drunk
in bumpers bremmen high,

Tom Bawcock's naame
We prais'd 'un to the sky!
Hmm. It's in Cornish dialect. Apparently there are 7 sorts of fish mentioned
though: um...
morgy brath= dogfish
lances= sand eels
scad = horse mackerel
This is worse than Cumbrian dialect. Should I cross-post to a Cornish
newsgroup and ask for a translation, d'you think?

Me too. I know I've said this before but I still program in
QBasic 4.5 under DOS. I've just written a program to run an
experiment for four years. Simple, fast (and I mean fast - I'm
running it on a pentium!) and reliable. I'd never be able to
duplicate the reliability and stability on an XP platform.

Re: Starrygazy Pie. (was Re: There was I)
You are wasting your time posting this here because < uk.local.*>
news groups, all of them, have been from the very beginning and will
be to the very end safe play areas for all sorts of raging nutters,
social malcontents, control freaks and malevolent beings.
You may feel that they should go elsewhere but where? The asylums
are all closed. Every so often they stop taking their medication and
go off their fucking heads. What would you have of them? Standing in
their back yards at midnight howling to the full moon and frightening
the shit out of the neighbours into the bargain? Have them running
around shafting masons, suspected vampires, werewolves, communists,
socialists, conservatives and women with vaginal warts by the dozen?
OR harmlessly making utter cunts of themselves in a uk.local group?
Lets face it what is one other cunt amongst the many?? I know what I
prefer!! The uk.local hierarchy of newsgroups is a valuable safety
valve which helps to keep society a wee bit more safe.
You may disagree. I would be interested to hear your opinion and no
doubt would the rest of the group. Thanks in advance.

I always found it easier to think with a 2B pencil. Strange but true. There
is something sensual about a soft lead pencil (Now, that comment is asking

I know what you mean, actually, about thinking with a pencil in your hand. I
can't listen to a lecture or "presentation" as they call these things
nowadays, without some sort of writing equipment in my hand. I suppose it's
for taking notes, but my notes tend to be in the form of drawings and
cartoons and diagrams spread over the surface of the page. If the lecturer
gets boring I'll start sketching some of the more unusual looking members of
the audience, or the lecturer himself. At college they thought I was
doodling and not paying attention, but it's my way of concentrating, and
without the pencil my mind wanders.

They don't make pies here. There are some little cakes, look like a pie and
have custard'ish cream in them, served with coffee in the cafes. That's the
only form of pie I know of. Pies every day when I'm home. Warm, dripping
pies in paper bags, eaten in the front seat of the van, with a view. Heaven.
Wish we could bring the van over again but the ferrie route has been all
mess up.

It's really nice. I like Cornwall. I'd like to go back for a couple of weeks

A country without pies! My dog! How can this be? For a Scot this is a
nightmare scenario. We are weaned on pies in Scotland. We spend our
childhoods with pie juices dripping down our chins. We grab quick pies from
butchers' and bakers' when we're in a hurry. We queue for them at football
matches. Even the English eat quite a lot of pies (but they're not as good
as Scotch Pies.)
Do you think the Norwegians would like pies if we introduced them? We could
set up a chain of pie shops all across Norway, selling a variety of good
British pies. It's a new niche market! We could be rich! What d'you think?
Mutton pies; chicken & mushroom pies; steak & kidney pies; Cornish pasties;
Forfar bridies; pies with gravy & mushy peas; apple & blackberry tarts;
rhubarb pies.... Can't you even get Mr Kipling pies? Dear me... I am
stunned. ... and making myself hungry thinking about it... Maybe it's time
for lunch.

Paella's not a flower either. Oh, do you mean 'flour', as in flour to make
gluten-free pastry? I can use any flour so long as it doesn't contain wheat,
barley or rye. I haven't actually tried making gluten-free pastry yet, but
I've got some recipes, so maybe it's time to have a go and create a nice
fish pie recipe to cook for you some time.
My mum used to make fish pies with mashed potato on top instead of a
piecrust. The tattie would go nice and brown and crisp on top in the oven.
They were very good.

Pity I'm not rich. I'd pay for you to come over here and clean my house
which is so much in need of a good clean it can't be even slightly boring.
I'm hopeless at cleaning. I'll work really hard at it, but in the end it
only looks like other people's houses before they've *started* cleaning.
What's the point? I need a wee wifie (as we called cleaning women in

I`m like that, I have a garage full of old macintoshes [1] (computers,
not the dirty old man variety) I renovate old pc`s to give away to
charities and needies, you`d be amazed at how dificult it is to give
them away!
[1] when I say 'full' I really mean not full there`s about five hiding
in there - you can have them if you want them!
