Raindrops are the size of Malteasers!! There'll be nowt left for you at this
rate. Thunder's died down a to a distant rumble now.
Still - threw the dog into the backyard for an hour for his yearly bath!!
Though, to be fair, we did take him down to Aldingham for a swim but the
tide was out..... which only made things worse with the mud!

It's raining here too, but I don't have a dog. No pets

Been a breezy up here this afternoon. Max gust of 57mph and a brief
spell of F8 Gale (>39mph sustained). All quiet now only F4/F5 (<25mph
sustained). It did rain but not a great deal, just a 1/4" or so in an
hour. No thunder or lighting that I was aware of, rarely get that up
here.

Naw at 1800 it's starting to get darkish out with the camera to get

Yeah, we got some heavy rain and wind, but no thunder. Yet. It's quietened
down now, though, and the wind's gone, so I guess it's on its way south by
now.
Must go out tomorrow and collect all the pears and apples that'll have been
blown off the fruit trees.

Rain doesn't need a purpose. It's wild and free.
If you really want something to do, try stripping down to your
unmentionables and go outside. Spread your arms out wide; look up and open
your mouth and shout something primal. Get wet. Run about on the grass in
your bare feet. Slide on the wet grass on your arse. Borrow some kids and
run around in the rain with them.
Or you could always get a dog.

My lawn is sort of crunchy these days, without the benefit of rain. My
neighbour has been banned from smoking in her house, and so has been out
several times every day setting up her lawn sprinkler, and is the only
lawn in the street to have a green lawn.
Master Pinny returned to soccer this afternoon after a parched summer
recovering from a broken ankle and then a sprain. The heavens decided to
open on him an hour into his first game!

I wish I'd asked my mother in law to bring Maltesers. I love those. I
only asked for teabags, Oxo cubes, genuine chicken Knorr cubes and
cocodamols. I forgot about Jelly Babies, too. I found Mincemeat at a
fortune a pound (equivalent of three quid for a 450g jar) shortly after
she took off on her flight over here.
It was rumbling thunder all afternoon in my friend's house, where I sat
and watched her chocolate lab and white westie snooze all through it.

It's not half as difficult to understand as some of your ramblings,
sweetie... she was at her friend's house; her friend has 2 dogs - a brown
labrador and a white west highland terrier; there was thunder rumbling away
all afternoon but the dogs didn't care and slept through it all... (Unlike

I opened the front door at about 8.30am as one of the dogs wanted out into
the garden. I stood and watched as he mooched around, and felt a drop of
rain. Seconds later the heavens opened and we were being drowned in a
torrential downpour. This dog usually doesn't give a toss about rain, but it
was too much even for him and he came dashing back inside. The other one
must have had some sort of psychic forewarning as she had never moved from
her bed.
The clouds have passed now, though. The sky is relatively clear, the sun's
getting through and all the wet paving stones are glistening in the
sunlight.

That's Pace. I saw the look in hers eye when someone fired off a shot gun

her tail disappearing thro the back door. The change of expression was

Hmm. I should have had a friend with a video camera the day I took my son
(aged about 9 at the time) and his pal out in the very heavy rain on to the
local putting green where we took off our shoes and slid on the short,
waterlogged and very slippery grass until we were all soaked through. Best
fun any of us had ever had, I think.
Fortunately the greenkeeper was too busy sheltering to see us.

I assure you Edith, if I made such a video (which I'm not planning to do,
sadly) you would be sitting bolt upright with your eyes popping out by the

Yup. That's her all right. Guns, thunder, fireworks and even the sound of
aircraft reverberating off low cloud all spook her. And if you try to be
sympathetic she just gets worse. You have to pretend not to care.

Nice here too, now.
Off to Ambleside later to do a paid gig with Belfagan at a big hotel. It's
indoors so the weather won't matter, but I'd prefer to drive down on dry
roads.
It's interesting how certain groups of people will hire a troupe of morris
dancers to entertain them before a posh meal. I'd never have thought of
that.

You could make a fortune on the corporate entertainment circuit with
something so wonderfully traditional.
Play your cards right and you could all get to go to foreign launches of UK
products.

Really? What an interesting idea. You sound like you know something about
such things. How would we get a foot in this particular door, do you think?

I've a lot of friends who are musicians and, particularly with my mate Dan's
string quartet, a lot of their revenue comes from companies wanting to
impress either customers or shareholders.
Ideally you need to get an agent who can sort this out for you but it would
certainly be worth a mailshot to advertising agencies.
E-mail is not an ideal medium for such an approach as spam filtering these
days is vicious and with a traditional art form such as yours a more
personal written approach would be appropriate.

You're onto something there. When I come to Britain for a
conference, they do tend to organise things like this. The last
one had a jazz trio - not something particularly British and it
was largely ignored. A Morris dancing troupe would be much more
difficult to ignore. Seems to me that the travel angle would be
viable too. My aunt was in a choir and they were able to go
places whenever Nova Scotia wanted to add some local atmosphere
to an international event.

I'm inclined to agree, especially if any Americans are involved.

Thats the hard bit. Firstly find the companies that organise these
corporate events then you have to persuade them that a Morris group
would really add to atmosphere etc. You'll probably have to be
prepared to travel all over the England as well.
Google is your friend I think for finding the companies then look at
the sort of events the do and pick a few that tend to theme on
traditional English. Keywords: hospitality, event, organise etc

I was at my friend's house all afternoon looking after her little girl
while she rested. Her Chocolate coloured Labrador Retriever and her
white West Highland Terrier were my companions and snoozed all the way
through the rumbling thunder, unafraid of it.
I married a bloke from Stockton on Tees, Edith.
Nit combs can be acquired in the USA, and I have at least 3 brought with
me from the UK, since I could never find one each time the kids got
infested.

Yeah, that would be the killer, I think. Most of the girls are employed - in
fact, most of them seem to be teachers - so they'd find it hard to get time
off to travel. It would be even more difficult with the recorder consort. We
even struggle to find times to practise together.
Time to form a new band, I think: something composed of self-employed or
retired or unemployed people who can actually get to gigs. Pity Kezzi's not

I'd like to go to New York.
We once went en masse to Marvejols, Cockermouth's French twin town. We were
away for about 10 days. Great fun. Too much food; too much wine; too hot but
great fun. We had to pay our own fare that time. Now if we could just swing
it to get our fares paid for something like that....

Blimey, that reminds me of a tour I went on with a band and the lead
guitarist brought a blond along with the biggest boops I've ever seen. She
smelled awful sweat, just awful. And they say life on the road is great fun.
I didn't see her wash once in a whole week. The driver was one weird wacko
too. He drove all day and night at 5 miles a hour without sleeping. The
vocalist tried knicking off with a local woman and the bands wages. He got
what was coming to him. He forgot his guitar under his bunk in a soft
cardbord box. I bet it's still there. It was brand new. I hate
musicians.....cough! sorry, count me out. They all had a pint during their
intervals. They started out playing for 1/2 hour with 10 mnts intervals. In
the end it was the other way around. Talk about sweeping them up and getting
them home. Yukk!
Edith.

Sigh... the recorder still has this bad image. Of course young kids play it
with squeaks and squawks - they're not very good at that age. They sound
pretty awful when they're learning the violin too, yet somehow people still
manage to take the violin seriously. We take the recorder seriously. If I
could just let you hear what we sound like... actually, I'm sure I've got
software nowadays that'll take a CD track and turn it into an mp3... I'll
get back to you...

If they take it seriously, it improves. My daughter moved on to play
tenor recorder. There are some lovely (mainly French) pieces for a
recorder group.
Also, you can't beat the introduction to "Stairway to Heaven".

Oohh ooh ... do you have a countertenor.. I did sound for a consort a

recorder or synth? The Keel Row brought back pleasant memorries to me, Ally.

I see. Well May the keel row be. That's interesting. I never did know what I

Keel : One of the main longitudinal beams (or plates) of the hull of a

A SYNTH??? Absolutely not! Thank you for your kind words, madame, but please
note that we all have enough wind of our own to play real genuine recorders
in a variety of sizes from garklein to bass.
Though if anyone would like to give us a big huge contrabass recorder, which
we can't afford, we'd be very grateful: thank you. One of these would do
fine - http://www.contrabass.com/pages/big-recorders.html - although they
look a bit odd they sound great. Or something like this would be nice:

Hey! Marra! Count yerself in. Your lyrics are absolutely beautiful. The song
you wrote for me :-
I'm journeying northward to Appleby Fair
T'is seventeen summers since I was born there
I've got a strong pony and own a fine wagon
But I need the love, I need the love, I need the love of a travelling man

Edith is confusing Piping Hot & Belfagan, methinks. Belfagan sometimes play
the Keel Row. Piping Hot don't usually dance. (Though we have given Tudor

Ally, have you ever seen a band called Svart Kaffe, they are Swedish I
thnk, they play tunes on 'willow flutes' made from lengths of plastic
pipe. the biggest is a huge length of soil pipe. they also have a violin
made from an oil can.
Mike Willoughby of Striding Edge is pretty good on the willowflute
harmonically

Haven't come across them, no. When we were at college I made several pipes,
complete with nicely turned mouthpieces, from a variety of tubing materials
of differing diameters and materials, including plastic drainpipe, copper
plumbing pipe, brass tubing intended for hanging rails and so on. I tested
the sounds they produced on the equipment in the physics lab. I seem to
remember the wide diameter white plastic pipe produced the mellowest sound,
but they all worked very well. I always intended to make some proper
instruments from plastic pipe, with correctly positioned toneholes and so
on, but of course once I'd left college real life got in the way.

I've seen Striding Edge a couple of times but I think they were only playing
standard instruments at those ceilidhs. Shame.

The little side door, a couple of steps up, is more - bottle in brown paper
bag - side, if it hasn't been boarded up.

Yeah. It'll be some good if my hotel room has internet. Right
good, in fact.

I'm going to NS because it's so nice there. I go every year I
can. This year I am taking some things to donate to the local
museum. I also am going to visit my lawyer who was doing a bit
of work for me locally. We've never met. Other than that I shall
wander around taking photos and eating the best seafood in the
world.
My room has no view, but hopefully an internet connection.

How exciting. I'll be with you in thought. You'll get to see the Autumn
colours again.

The global warming seems to have delayed the fall colours this
year. Maybe they are turning colour in NS but here they haven't
really started. It's still 20C during the day. Loads of sun -
except at the moment - there's a strong wind and sideways rain.
Supposed to end by lunch (about an hours from now).
