Crewe Open Day - fascinating!
M'lady and I, plus a friend, were at Crewe open day the other weekend,
on the Sunday, which meant amongst other things we got to see the Cobo
craned off its rests, whizzed down the shed 20 feet in the air, and
placed gently onto its bogies - which was a truly awe-inspiring sight!
Lots of other interesting things to see, including a 91 on a road
trailer, some very nicely lined up steam locos, the cab of the Badger, a
couple of burnt-out pacers (ouch! - what happened?), and lots of
heritage diesels. One of the NR HST power cars was on show, with the
front coupler panel open and lots of shiny new braided hose/cable
visible, anyone know what this was for?
Inside the sheds there were some really interesting displays of parts,
fittings, and test gear, as well as various models, etc.
We also found the two bogies from the fGW power car involved in the
Ufton Nevret derailment. We stood for a moment in silence, and
deliberately didn't take any pictures of them, though the damage, and
how it had been caused, was plain to see. Somehow they brought it home
in a deeply personal way.
