Ally - removing varnish
I have just used my new hot air paint remover and tried it on various
painted surfaces. It's very good on gloss paint. Not bad on undercoats but
It aint so good on polyurethane varnish. The pine discoloured before the
varnish layer went. It did not come off as a layer but appeared to melt into
little beads, like sweat. I wouldn't use this method for a valuable antique.

Thanks for that. Interesting. I love the image of a table sitting there
sweating while you hit it with hot air... But surely an antique wouldn't be
varnished with polyurethane varnish in the first place?

So I guess a gadget like this would be good for restoring the original
surface to those unfortunate pieces of furniture that were covered with
paint in the 80s, when people seemed to paint everything in sight. Ah. They
still do, don't they?

I agree. Antique shouldn't have polyurethane on them. The usual finish is a
button polish to seal the wood - even a linseed oil dressing - thenbeeswax
polish. At the moment I have no waste antique finish to try the gun on, so I
am not sure what it will do.

If it's painted with gloss paint the gun will do as good a job as nitromors
or similar preparations. Maybe at sonme future date I will have a chance of
trying it.
Incidentally, the gun I bought from Argos was a complete kit at only 14.99.

Kindred spirits...at last!
After reading the stuff put out here ..............
I have an overwhelming need to share this with you all.
Its about what I hate most about newsgroups . . . . control freaks
like netnannies and net cops and here is why.

They are like when a little bit of shite gets stuck just inside yer
rectum not far enough down that you can squeeze it either in or out.
It just lies there, you feel it but can do nought about it. It just
sits there and irritates the hell out of you. The only effect is the
production of irritation nothing else. That is really what they are
like. They achieve nothing else. The trolls are still there!!

Shite in yer rectum will eventually be resolved. Netnannies and
netcops are always there. The name and individual may change but there
is always some shit baiting and upsetting harmless trolls. The effect
is to give the troll a mission in life. Look at the uk.local hierarchy
at the moment, yorkshire, birmingham and essx in particular. Ruined
for the average poster. The majority of groups are empty, except for
troll droppings, spam and the odd genuine post!!!

What amazes me is that some of the netnannies not only boast about
reporting contributors to their ISP but attempt to get other people
to do the same. This gives the troll an extra boast of "adrenaline".
Its all beyond me!

Maybe I am too sensitive a guy.

Thanks for your interest.

You should really use Germaloids Cooling Spray before
you write anything. It might improve yer mood.

If you have a valuable antique, it shouldn't have poly varnish on it: (or
the person who put it there should be shot).

The only thing for that stuff is "Nitromors" or equivalent (chemical
stripper).
The only trouble with that method, is that it is very irritating to the
skin if you get it on, you have to clean it off with water afterwards (not
good for any fine veneers etc.) and it will also bleach the wood, so you
have to restain it afterwards. (Then use French polish or beeswax etc.)
Not such a problem with pine.

I actually considered filling it with soil and planting potatos once. Now,
with the pergo tiles in it, I still get my socks wet. I could have lillies
growing up thro the holes in the tiles... Cors it would be a bit of a mess
having to scrape up the soil every Autumn. The only way out now is to make a
groove from the middle of the puddle towards the thingie with holes in and a
pipe down to the lawn below, except that the thingie with the holes in with
the pipe down to the lawn, is too high compared to the fall in the veranda
floor.I tell yah. Az ga'en crazy.

Yes. Sweden. It's more or less just around the corner. Orly bought some
equipment that he had to return. Kendal is a nice town.

Yes. A sunday paper and a pint of milk at the supermarket. Some sand, some
shady place, grass seed and tsome op soil at the garden centre. We are
laying more lawn to make the garden easier to manage. We had two large
flower beds at the bottom of the garden but neighbours sycamore trees are
now cutting out so much light they were not a success. The lawn in now
laid. We await the green shoots growing. Its now raining nicely , just in
time to save me watering it.

Hahah. No, once was enough. I was just responding to Edith's boast of being
abroad 3 times this week. The only place of note I've been this week is
Kendal. Once.

I might go to Penrith next Saturday. That's a bit foreign too.

You don't have to go far to hear your language, Ally. Sometimes my ears grow
tired of listening to Norwegian and I long just for someone to say hello to

Yes, well, I only go now and again. There's a super duper car boot sale
there. I'd be going anyway from time to time, so I might as well combine my
journey with other stuff. I also have a bit of a shopping list for some of
the Penrith shops - stuff I can't get around here. So my day will be very
worthwhile. It would certainly be a very bad idea to drive for of an hour
*just* for recycling.

Aha! Now I understand. Recycling. You are very green Edith: well done.

We tried to get them to site some recycling bins in our village (not for
plastics of course - just paper, tins and glass) and they nearly did, but
nobody could agree on a site, so they gave up. There are at least 2
recycling sites in Maryport, though, and we go there fairly regularly for
basic shopping and stuff as it's only 3 miles away, so it's easy enough.
It's just the plastics, tetrapaks and aluminium foil that they won't deal
with locally. And they have actually installed a big skip for plastic
bottles at Tesco in Workington, so it's just the other plastic stuff that
has to go to Penrith. So we still have to go, but not as often. Anyway, I
like Penrith. Nice shops: nice market: nice car boot sale.
