Too close to the WCML by all accounts. The APT is all depressed when
it sees the Pendolinos "racing" past, and keeps thinking about the
train it could have been.

Apparantly, the mood that it is in at the moment is scaring all the
customers away, and hence profits are down.

The place always looks closed whenever I go past it. Has it been open to
visitors recently?

Thinking of places like that closing and selling off their assets, what
happened to the locos etc at Steamtown in Carnforth and to the locos, trams,
buses and cars at Transperience in Bradford?

I was lucky to visit both of those soon before they closed: I began to
wonder whether my visit and the closure were related ;-)

With decent financial support, Transperience could have been very good. They
needed Low Moor station to reopen to make it easy to get there: it's too far
to walk from Bradford city centre and I never found details of buses, so I
had to drive there. They had a fair amount of spare land to allow room for
growth. Maybe to some extent it was seen as a poor man's Crich tram museum.
I wonder if the trams were moved to Crich after Transperience closed.

Steamtown did not close. It ceased to be a museum and is now a working depot
for West Coast Railway Company, surely a good thing.

The Exeter West signal box owners/operators, based at the Railway Age, have
stated that this is an unfounded rumour and the Railway Age will be opening
as usual at Easter 2006

Sorry. I should have been more precise. I did know that it had only closed
to the public as a museum, and had not closed totally. What happened to the
museum exhibits?

I've just emailed the contact address info@therailwayage.co.uk alerting them
to this unfounded rumour and suggesting that they put a clarification
statement on the web site http://www.therailwayage.co.uk/

Moral: never trust anything that's written all in capitals, especially when
it comes from someone with a very dodgy email address!

I recently had an email telling me I'd been selected (on the advice of
my country's chamber of commerce) to receive a contract to build a
railway in Togo :-)

I have just checked the website and I see Sunday is the last day for this
year.
No mention that I can see of an admission price, anyone know?

Can't find much of anything on the website to be honest. It certainly
doesn't encourage me to visit.

I'd never actually realised until this thread that it was seasonal, like a
preserved railway. I'd always assumed that, being a museum, in effect, it
would be open all year round! I would have thought that, with good
advertising, it would be possible to cover the running costs of a skeleton
staff over the winter. Other railway museums seem to manage it.

Ah! Togo or not Togo, that is the question. I guess you'll decide not to
go to Togo.

ROFL!!
That really could be true!

As Peter Pendolino rushed by with a "parp parp", and Thomas went past
on the slow lines with a "peep peep", Andrew APT felt grumpy and went
into a sulk, trying to scare off the few people who came near for some
fun. Very few people visited him these days. They all seemed to go to
this place called York. Andrew wondered if he could be attached to
Peter one day, and maybe Peter would take him to this York place too,
where people would come in their thousands and marvel at him. He could
be a great engine again there. He could be loved again there!

He asked Peter one day, as he was stopped at a signal nearby, if Peter
would take him to York. Peter was very cruel and said that he was old
and past it, and no-one would be interested. Besides, York already had
an APT of their very own, so Andrew was not quite simply not wanted.
With that, the signal cleared, and Peter tilted off into the distance,
leaving poor old, run down Andrew in a very bad mood and sulking to
himself...
"Never mind!" said the watery controller. "We *will* be open again next
year, and people will come again and marvel at you then. Have a good
winter!"
