Nails on a TV aerial
Hi there,

I've got a bit of a problem with bird poo (and lots of it) underneath
my TV aerial - with a tin roof, it stands out a mile away!

I'm thinking of getting some nail-strips (like those used in a nail
gun) and sticking it around the rods of the aerial .. But I'm wondering
if this will kill my reception!

Has anyone else tried anything like this? Or any other ideas on how to
stop those birds getting too comfortable on my aerial?

Cheers,

Matt

Well, it'll destroy the electrical characteristics of the aerial. You can
get the same stuff made from plastic - try that instead.

Normally I'd suggest putting the aerial inside, but since you've a
tin roof...!

Putting it inside word harm the reception more than...

Cable ties, with the ends left on and sticking upwards.

Loosely wrap the aerial in a couple of layers of plastic garden netting?

What about one of those fake Owl decoy things sat next to it.
Should keep the birds away from the area in general not just the TV aerial.
(So I am led to believe)

The local leccy board put a owl on a pylon - it seems to work. The birds no
longer sit on the earth wire.

We found they were only effective (in a similar application) with starlings
for about 6 months. After that it was back to square one.

I wouldn't. It has the potential to collect water and maybe afect the polar
diagram. Not a problem with analogue, but maybe just enough to tip a
marginal digital signal over the edge.

LOL.
I have visions of 2 pigeons sitting on a roof and pondering their plan
of assault..

"you fly past and sht in his eyes and I'll knock 'im of the roof"

Anyone invented a fake owl with a head that rotates?
I'm thinking some sort of solar panel charging a battery, and a small
motor on a timer so that every so often the head turns by thirty
degrees.

Next complaint will be the snow on the telly screen when the ageing
motor
crackles when turning...

Mungo :-)

P.S. Another idea: seemingly birds have an aversion to snakes.
Buy a fake rubber snake and wind it round the aerial?
It would make interesting footage to see a rubber snake fall off the
aerial
on a windy day into the path of your postman...

Probably get some neighbour complaining to the RSPCA that you're scaring
the birds!

My mother had complaints from the neighbours about the havoc their cat
was wreaking on the rabbits from the field opposite. Under pressure, she
re-homed the cat. Two weeks later, the neighbours all asked her to get
the cat back...
