ALBERT
Has anyone heard from Albert?. There was a message sent over the news that
Albert's house won't stand the winds and they are leaving.Gees, this is a
big one on it's way in to Houston. Queues out of the city 11 miles long. I
hope they make it.

I thought Al was away at the moment anyway. So he obviously had
a very accurate premonition and bugged out early.

I hope the religious right in the US now see what comes of backing the
Chimp: divine retribution.
Mind you I am sure the religious right in the US don't mind if a few blacks
get blown away.

It's an obscure little tune from a band you may not have heard

I didn't know that song. You must remember to take into consideration that I
moved to the land of the elves just as The Beatles hit the spot light. The
elves had not heard of them- year Christmas 1961- Excuse me.
Roll on Jimmie Hendrix.

Norway is where people enjoy themselves by self deprivation. Take quiet
peaceful holidays in snow holes, walk miles on skis just to be able to walk
back again and that kind of thing. Or so I've heard.
Mind you I don't recall being much interested in the Beatles either. Were
they the gang with odd little suits?
Edgar with Norse Viking roots??
P.S. What is Jimmie Hendrix?

That's a flattering description of your Norwegian neighbours, I
must say. I have a friend in Norway (other than our Edith). He
sends me photos of their holidays. You are right. They do look
quiet and peaceful. Usually the photos are of them in some cove
or fjord in their boat or on shore. Many of the women-folk are
naked sunning themselves. I took that to mean they were very
cosmopolitan. Perhaps I should realign my thinking and consider
them isolated and uninformed about bathing suits?
Johnny-reconsidering
PS Jimmy Hendrix restored the popularity of traditional southern
blues music to the American masses having learned it in England!
Albeit with a wicked rock guitar.

Just remember the Norse Vikings were the ones that wanted something better
and left Norway. Some came to Cumberland and helped make it the place it
became. I'd like to think my people made that move but who knows.

Mr Hendrix wrote many fine choons, here is an excerpt from one such...
There's a famous seaside place called Blackpool,
That's noted for fresh-air and fun,
And Mr and Mrs Ramsbottom
Went there with young Albert, their son.
A grand little lad was their Albert
All dressed in his best; quite a swell
'E'd a stick with an 'orse's 'ead 'andle
The finest that Woolworth's could sell.
Sadly young James Albert Hendrix suffered an early demise when he was
devoured by Mama Cass at a Turtles concert in Beautiful Downtown
Burbank, USA

Re: ALBERT
I have an overwhelming need to share this with you all. Its about what
I hate most about newsgroups . . . . control freaks like netnannies
and net cops and here is why.
They are like when a little bit of shite gets stuck just inside yer
rectum not far enough down that you can squeeze it either in or out.
It just lies there, you feel it but can do nought about it. It just
sits there and irritates the hell out of you. The only effect is the
production of irritation nothing else. That is really what they are
like. They achieve nothing else. The trolls are still there!!
Shite in yer rectum will eventually be resolved. Netnannies and
netcops are always there. The name and individual may change but there
is always some shit baiting and upsetting harmless trolls. The effect
is to give the troll a mission in life. Look at the uk.local hierarchy
at the moment, yorkshire, birmingham and essx in particular. Ruined
for the average poster. The majority of groups are empty, except for
troll droppings, spam and the odd genuine post!!!
What amazes me is that some of the netnannies not only boast about
reporting contributors to their ISP but attempt to get other people
to do the same. This gives the troll an extra boast of "adrenaline".
Its all beyond me!
Maybe I am too sensitive a guy.
Thanks for your interest.

I just spent half an hour on the phone to my friend who lives just
outside Houston. Her household of 2 people and 2 dogs and 2 cats has
just expanded to include her late first husband's son, wife and two
small children, her husband's daughter and family, a small boy from down
the road whose parents are emergency services workers and on duty
tonight, her aunt who lives alone nearby and a woman she met at a gas
station who had spent the night in her truck, which was broken down.
The windows are boarded up and a generator has been acquired and gallons
of water and soda. They expect the storm to hit at midnight and the eye
to pass between one and six tomorrow morning. Her husband has gone to
bed to sleep off his boarding-up exertions, and noone expects to sleep
tonight.
Presumably, Albert's got his neighbours' number and they'll hopefully
help keep an eye on his property.
I was down at the beach this morning, way north up the Atlantic coast in
Long Island, and there were plenty of people wading in the unusually
warm water and riding the high surf.

Doesn't look to me like Houston will get the full force of Rita.
Neither will New Orleans but some of the levies have broken
anyway and it's flooding again in places.
In fact, Rita looks right on line for Tania in Arkansas.

lot of energy and rain. It will lose it's eye and the worst of
it's damage potential after it makes landfall. It will be slow
moving so the whole area will be getting a lot of rain. The
track shows it making landfall tonight but it will only get to
Arkansas next Wednesday with winds below 39 mph.
What are the odds it will move up our way by a week Sunday and
ruin my drive and ferry to Nova Scotia?

I lived in Aberdeen. 39 mph is a breeze. They're used to tornadoes down
there.
I never saw a poor bookmaker and I'm no bookmaker, but I'll be glad of
some rain and so will my lawns and plants.

I know that Tania's having problems accessing newsgroups at the moment,
so I thought I'd mention that last night she told me that they were
bracing themselves for the storm, and she's stocking up with lantern
fuel and candles and other essentials. They don't expect it to hit
until Monday or Tuesday. Although there will be heavy rain with the
storm too, she said that the biggest danger was from tornadoes.
Let's hope Rita loses some strength now she's over land.

Oh she will and very rapidly, the energy source for a hurricane,
cyclone, typhoon (depending on which bit of the tropics you are in) is
warm (>26C ish) ocean water.
Of course high winds over warm water produces lots of evaporation so
there is a tremendous amount of water in the clouds and as they move
north and cool produce huge quantities of rain. If the remnants of a
hurricane make it over to the UK the warm (ex tropical) and very wet
air they bring is quite noticeable. This season the remnants Hurricane
Maria gave us a few days of warm and wet weather.
Rita will be just a very wet storm by the time it gets to AK, winds no
more than what we get several times during the winter. There will be a
lot of rain though.

Rofffffffffffl. You're cheeky.
There still is. There have been many suicides among young people in this
little town alone and it gets worse the farther north you get,.... then on,
into Russia. I shudder to think. I believe alcohol, boredom, long dark
winters and lack of funds is behind it....and perhaps the need for vitamin D
?

I think your drive and ferry to Nova Scotia are safe from the effects of
Rita. She has fizzled out for the most part except for the rain showers and
storms she's throwing up your way tonight and tomorrow. The storm didn't
stall here as expected. It's a good thing because as it was some areas of
Arkansas received six inches of rain last night. We experienced a lazy day
of rain and refreshing cool breezes. Southern Arkansas did have several
tornados but only one place I know of had severe damage.
The next "tropical depression" shouldn't be any trouble until about the time
you're ready to come home...

Thank goodness it was nothing like the predictions. Still there have been
23 reported tornados today. Very few have actually touched down. Alabama
is seeing the bad weather right now.

On the way back from Zermatt yesterday SWMBO promised she'd buy me a double
ice cream cone at Brig so we grab our bags and run as fast as my ancient
legs will carry me into the Migros only to find the ice cream machine had
been decomissioned for the winter earlier that day. So all the way back to
Zurich we consoled ourselves with the thought that we'd have some time to
eat a last sausage in Zurich Station. Another plan frustrated by the ever
efficient Swiss. The train we were on was going to the Airport so there was
no need to change in the city and we never got our last supper in Zurich.
(We did manage a lunchtime wurst in Zermatt though).
BTW has anyone seen the lines for furriners at Immigration in Heathrow. It
took SWMBO almost two hours to get through last week and today was going to
be about three hours if she hadn't snagged a supervisor and told her we'd
miss our Gatwick connection at the rate the line was moving. At one time
only 9 of 21 stations were manned with about a thousand people in line and
more arriving by the minute. For a country that considers itself to be a
tourist destination they need to get their act together. The last thing
incoming tourists need after a 10 hour flight is a three hour wait at
Heathrow. I can understand now why my colleagues fly KLM when going to the
Middle East. In contrast Zurich took two minutes and Houston about the
same.
We're about the same latitude as the Woodland, about 20 miles west, far
enough from the coast for the worst effects of storms to have dissipated.
That was a major reason for choosing the location.
