Caledonian Sleeper from Euston : Ticket query.
If you buy a sleeper return ( of any description ) from Euston to the
Highlands do you have to do the return journey on the Sleeper from
Scotland or can you book the return leg back to Euston on a regular
"day" train ?
Thanks !

Yes.
It depends which sort of ticket you buy, as there are several sorts.
However, one way trips by the sleeper are no problem. Once I
travelled to London and the cheapest way of doing it was to go both
ways on the sleeper using single tickets.

AIUI a sleeper return is a First Scotrail ticket so valid only on the
sleeper. However, if you want to go sleeper one way and day train the other
you can either get a sleeper single (or a bargain berth if one is available)
and a Value (or whatever the GNER APEX single is called) the other, or you
can get a flexible ticket, e.g. Saver, plus a sleeper supplement one way.
Details of the sleepers are at

Does anyone know if SVRs are valid? Now Trainline is giving the
sleepers (seated[1]) as an option (finally!), they only seem to want
to show Standard and First Open (the latter being pointless as First
Class seated accommodation is not[1] provided).
[1] I'm sure I heard they were also offering actual sleepers, but I
couldn't make it show them, only seat reservations.
[2] Well, actually, it is, but it is at the Standard fare.

Savers are valid in berths on payment of the berth fee, but the seated
section on Scottish sleepers have their own fares and Savers are not
valid in these.

Why is that, out of interest? Standard Open Singles and Returns
(route Any Permitted) appeared to be OK - or are they?. Do these
count as Charter Trains? Otherwise, how are Scotrail permitted not to
allow normal tickets?
Incidentally, I've managed to get Trainline (well, the Scotrail
variant) to offer berths, but the pricing is all wrong - it prices
them as separate tickets, so people are going to get overcharged. It
does so by way of poorly-designed icons, the meaning of which are not
described. It also won't add a berth fee to a connectional journey.
Nice idea, badly implemented, and arguably far worse than nothing.

Only got my Return Portion from my sleeper trip
Class: STD
Ticket Type: Saver Return
Adult: One
Child NIL
Date 02-Nov-03A
From: London Terminals
To Dundee
Valid: See Restrictions
Route: <Blank>
Price 87.20 Quid
Nothing on it to suggest its not valid on any combination of services from
London to Dundee
Unless you Can't use Saver Returns for that?
The onbious reason you can't jsut use any old London -> Scotland Ticket on
the sleeper is that its reservation only, but then doesnt' that jsut mean
you need any valid ticket for the router and to make a seat/berth
reservation?

I've now been able to get it to offer SVRs - perhaps it was a blip and
they *are* valid.
The other point stands, however, that it only offers berths on return
tickets if you do both ways via the Sleeper, which means people are
going to get ripped off unless they're wanting seat-only bookings.

The above bit?
Seriously, perhaps it's a shame we didn't go all large-format tickets,
as it (and routes) could have been printed explicitly in full.
