Amsterdam pub suggestions
We're visiting Amsterdam the week after next. I've heard of T'ij, which
sounds excellent. Does anybody have any other recommendations please -
preferably reasonably central and with food? TIA.

Just beware of the opening hours, it's not open every day, and closes at
8pm or sth...

In de Wildeman, Kolksteg 3. Food is minimal there, but the range of
draught (keg) beer is really good, and it's got the best range of beers
from dutch micros around.

't Loosje, Nieuwmarkt 32, has a wider range of food. Beer range is ok,
especially the draught 'i Ij Columbus.

If you're looking for a quiet, traditional dutch place, try Ot en Sien,
Buiksloterweg 27. Nice small place acros steh river from the main
station (there's a free ferry - just be sure to take the one that just
goes across the river. Beer range is okay too, possibly with one or two
rarities

The thing that succeeded the Maximiliaan brewpub, next to ' Loosje, is
not worth your time and money, the house wit is dire at best.

The other microbrewery in Amsterdam, apart from 't Ij, is de Prael
(http://www.deprael.nl/) which makes a nice range of beers in german and
british styles. I had their Juliana "Orange Beer", that is, a lovely
hoppy UK-style pale ale with an extra kick from orange peels. Niiiice ! :o)

If you're a tad into spirits, the obvious place to visit is Wynand
Fockink, Pijlsteeg 31, a small lane running east from the dam Square...
Next door to it, the Distillerderij Janssens
(http://www.distil-janssens.nl/), a tiny operation is worth a visit. Try
their gin (from a 17C recipe) , and their Amsterdamer Bitter, amongst
other things.

Oh and whilst you're near the Dam square, the beer shop on the left-hand
side of the royal palace is a good place to buy beer from dutch micros
to take home. Open on Sundays too.

Cheers !

Laurent

Many thanks for that Laurent! I take it from what you say that t'ij
brouwerij (formerly Maximiliaan) is worth a miss - assuming that's the place
you meant.

Oh and for more info on that place, you really must look at the English
version of their web site :-( - not that the Dutch version is much better.
If the pub is as good as the web site I'll definitely give it a miss!

Sorry I got a bit confused there. That will be De Bekeerde Suster won't it.
No need to reply :-)

It's the second canal from city center, after Singel. Arendsnest is near
the 1st bridge from the north.
