Victoria to Greenhithe (return) & Liverpool Street to Chelmsford
Hi there, I hope someone can answer this question.

I'm going to be making the following journeys as part of a two day trip in
London and I would appreciate assistance with knowing how much each fare is
going to cost me. Please assume that on each day, I will be in possession of
a Zone 1-6 One Day Travelcard and all travel will be after 9:30AM. I am led
to believe that I can simply pay for the cost of the ticket from the Zone 6
boundary to the station in question.

Day 1:

Victoria to Greenhithe. This will be a return journey.

Day 2:

Liverpool Street to Chelmsford. This will be a single journey.

Thank you in advance for any help with my request.

You'd be better off going from Charing Cross or London Bridge, as they
have direct trains to Greenhithe. Is there any particular reason for
you going from Victoria ?

Not sure on what the actual fare from BZ6 to Greenhithe is, but
Crayford (last station inside zone 6 I believe) to Greenhithe is 2.50
cheap day return, so I expect it'll be a little less than that.

Sometimes the fare from BZ6 to an outboundary station is *more* than the
fare from the last station inside zone 6 - see previous threads e.g. re East
Croydon to South coast stations. Not necessarily the case for Greenhithe,
though.

Best thing is to phone NR enquiries and ask them to see what fare pops
up, because there probably isn't a standard formula. I have a feeling
that maximising the travelcard and minimising the return journey beyond
the zones usually works out cheaper (ie, if returning to Central
London, better to get zone 1 - 6 plus return to Greenhithe than get
zone 1 - 2 plus return from boundary zone 2 to Greenhithe).

In the case of Greenhithe, the advantage of an extension from the
travelcard zone is that you have a choice of return routes, as opposed
to getting a return from eg Barnehurst. Going from Victoria and
changing at Dartford is fine except late evenings or Sundays.

Boundary Zone 6 - Greenhithe £2.50 CDR
Boundary Zone 6 - Chelmsford £4.70 single.

Are there not 2 per hour Victoria - Dartford via Bexleyheath? One of
those and change at Dartford would do it, but it seems a bit of a long
way round when there are faster direct trains from Charring X / Waterloo
East / London Bridge.

There are, yes.
When I did a search on the national rail journey planner, however, it
suggested to get the Circle/District line from Victoria to Charing
Cross then get a train from there rather than getting a train to
Dartford and changing. I'm not sure how well/badly the
Victoria-Dartford train connects with those that serve Greenhithe
(continuing to Gravesend and Gillingham).

Indeed, but Victoria - Dartford (change) - Greenhithe is probably more
luggage friendly than District Vic - Embankment, the Charring Cross -
Greenhithe, as there are lifts at Dartford, and cross platform
interchanges if you're lucky.
