"Ambiguous" class 25
During the early 70's I attended school in Worcester, and some of us
regularly used to take in the delightful panorama offered by Railway Walk
during the hour-long lunch break. Once I spotted a class 25 which had had a
cab transplant (a common practice, I believe), but had obviously not
subsequently visited the paint shop and therefore sported a different number
at each end. It was in grubby green livery, with, IIRC, all over yellow
ends. I think the cabs might even have been of different
design.Unfortunately I have no record of the number(s).
I would like to model this locomotive, or one like it, preferably with two
different types of cab, if such a thing truly ever existed. Does anyone else
here remember seeing one of these hybrids? If so, do you have any record of
numbers, or any photographs? Any such information would be greatly
appreciated.
Best regards
Geoff

44 009 (D9) "Snowdon" had one nose end with a headcode panel - but that was
more a case of that being the 'standard' version at that time (some 'split'
headcode 45s also ended up with odd nose ends). They wouldn't have
deliberately built a new nose end with discs just so that it matched the
other end. The only time that that sort of thing happened was when Doncaster
swapped cabs between 31s and they tried to keep disc-fitted cabs to
disc-fitted locos (the exception being D5518, latterly 31 101, where both
original disc-fitted cabs were destroyed and replaced with headcode-fitted
ones).

I cannot remember the true identity of the loco concerned but there was
a class 25 at Peterborough in 1973 which had been fitted with a cab
clearly showing D5114 under the top coat of blue. This particular ScR
class 24 having been withdrawn many months earlier. I later saw the
other (damaged) D5114 cab at Derby Works. I also have in my possession
a 1974 photo I took at Stoke in 1974 showing 24142 ex works with two
class 25 cabs fitted complete with class 25 headcode boxes and sealed
gangway doors.
