I saw the ill fated outward leg leave Stalybridge behind an EWS 66. then DoG
ran round it's support coach and left for ELR I presume.

We were on it: It got to Manchester Victoria at a cracking pace, but then
was less than lively up the bank to Miles Platting, with some people
commenting that it didn't sound "right" and there was lots of black smoke.
There was an announcement that it had got through 1000 gallons of water
between Victoria and Staleybridge, due to "a valve being stuck open."
Whilst waiting for the relief 66 the Fire Brigade arived to top up the water
so that it could limp home.
The return departure was delayed until 18:00 to give people a reasonable
amount of time in York but the diesel got the train back to Lime Street only
half an hour or so later than the scheduled time - very impressive
performance and no serious signal checks.

I'll think you'll find it was more than half an hour EARLY into Lime
Street, and was was worth the dash across the Pennines to York to have
40145 back !

The delayed departure allowed people to get to York for the far more
rateable 40145 which was called on at very short notice from the East Lancs
Railway to haul the train back to Liverpool. Unfortuneately I was unable to
go for the 40 but it did arrive about 25 EARLY not late back into Lime
Street.
