Car Shimmy
Do any of you know why an Hiace 4WD Toyota would shimmy, I think at the
front, please.
Edith.

What, exactly, do you mean by 'shimmy'?
Do you mean 'shimmy like my sister Kate' as in 'dance'? I didn't know
vehicles danced! (except for old BMC models, which did the Morris dance!!!
ha ha.....)

1) check the wheel nuts of the front wheels for tightness
2) check the pressure and balance of the front tyres
If it still "shimmys" then one of the following :
the steering box, the track-rod ends, or the steeringrack clamps
are bu88ered.

Probably due to wear in suspension components, badly aligned wheels,
or crash damage preventing proper set up. Having tyres that have more
grip on the front than those on the rear can produce strange effects
but that is more of a vaugeness or wander in the steering rather than
a "shimmy".
Defining "shimmy" a bit more might help.

It was at it's worst on bad roads, around 80kmh and when you lessen the
pace-not all that bad mind you, but I noticed my handbag hanging from the
hand grip shaking like sister Kate (front right side) and thought ho!ho!,
here's summet to look out for, then Orly stopped, pulled down his 4WD and it
was a lot better on the good Swedish roads yesterday.
It wasn't a massive shimmy, Dave but it definitely was theer.
Orly is going to check the wheels. They look so big and broad and screwed on
too tight, like, errm, to me.
Edith none mechanical.
