How about

How about playing "The Fiddler of Castlerigg" and making a new dance to it
for Rex and Orly and myself, hey and putting it on your home page, Ally and
if you can hook up to electicity outside this (race-peoples') house, I'll
sing it thro a mic and blow their roof off, hey? Are you game.

Heh heh. That would be fun. I'd love to try. It takes ages to create a new
dance, though: seems to be much harder work than writing a song or a tune.
You've got to be careful about unlicenced amplified music these days. As
morris dancers, we have a certain amount of immunity from this new Licencing
Act, but I believe it's only so long as our music is completely unamplified.
Some people use those wee portable buskers' amps for their guitars; others
have singers in their bands, and to be heard over the accordians and so on
they need a litle bit of amplification. (See the Flagcrackers of Craven, for
example - www.flagcrackers.co.uk ) All this stuff may fall foul of the new
law. I'd hate you to be arrested on the shores of Derwentwater, Edith!
(Though I can't think of a nicer place if you insist on breaking the law!)

Pull the other one. You're tough as old boots, you are. A week in the nick
and you'd have written personal poems for all the inmates and probably drawn
caricatures of all the screws as well. They'd chuck you out for disrupting
the place.

Hmm. They wouldn't let you out for stuff like that. Which singer was it that
charmed the prison governor so much by playing his guitar that they released
him? I'm sure it was either Leadbelly or Johnny Cash...

It was Leadbelly. I think that started his Blues career. That and meeting
Billy Smith (love her music) and Blind Lemon.
Johnny Cash is from Arkansas, btw. Noticed there is a movie coming out soon
about his life and times.

Bobby Bear has been here to Horten & Bob Marley and a few others. Our music
scene has died down since the pub that held Sunday night jam sessions
closed. They have it in another pub now but it just isn't the same. The

I believe you have to have dancing also, it the morris dancing stops, so
must the music - otherwise some jobsworth will pop up and arrest you
for enjoying yourself without a license.
On of the most outragious things is that they are considering an
exemption for dj`s and mobile discotheques. So you can have 10 kilowatts
of numpty dj blasting out crap pop music with no worries, but if some
old josser (or jossess) should play the spoons in some far corner of the
bar, they`ll clap im and the landlord in irons.
I think it`s a 20,000 fine for a normal breech of the peace obviously
a lot for for bodhran and banjo players.
I`m lobbying my MP for a exemption for ukulele players of course.. I
have high hopes as I have been reliably informed that Mr Blair himself
is a well known plonker of some repute.

I've seen it suggested that various entertainers are thinking of hiring the
odd morris dancer to dance along with their music, so that they'll be
exempt. Might be a nice little niche market for impecunious morrismen.

Yeah, and you can have a wide-screen plasma TV in your pub, showing the
latest big football match at full volume, with hundreds of loud, drunken
footy fans in attendance, disturbing the entire neighbourhood. But the
upstairs folk club which attracts 12 people and a yorkshire terrier to watch
occasional visiting acoustic singers and guitar players now requires a large
and expensive licence, which many small pubs can't afford. The folk club
disappears but the drunks keep chanting their football songs.
These laws don't apply in Scotland. There are times I seriously consider
going home.

It's a good song for a red cross concept.
No, I am not a specific fan of his, Tania. My x played the steele guitar,
double Sho-Bud and I sang a few songs with the country groups he was in. I
wrote down the songs for them by listening to the tapes. Lots and lots of
country songs by many artists. Tanya Tucker-George Jones-Rickie Scaggs-Wylon
Jennings-Johny Cash and hundreds more, yet I never got around to "Picking
the Wildwood Flower" :)
Never liked the words to (stand by your man - for after all, he's just a

You seem to be labouring under a misunderstanding. Therefore
I would like to explain the function of < uk.local.*> news groups.
All of them, have been from the very beginning and will be to the very
end safe play areas for all sorts of raging nutters, social
malcontents, control freaks and malevolent beings. You may feel that
they should go elsewhere but where? The asylums are all closed. What
would you have of them? Standing in their back yards at midnight
howling to the full moon and frightening the shit out of the
neighbours into the bargain? Have them running around shafting masons,
suspected werewolves, communists, socialists, conservatives and women
with vaginal warts by the dozen? OR harmlessly making utter cunts of
themselves in a uk.local group? Lets face it what is one other cunt
amongst the many in this group?? I know what I prefer!!
The uk.local hierarchy of newsgroups is a valuable safety valve which
helps to keep society a wee bit more safe.
You may disagree. I would be interested to hear your opinion and no
doubt would the rest of the group. Thanks in advance.

What do you mean cover? Like album cover? Paul Simon wrote the song but
Johnny Cash did sing it and record it for one of his albums.
The commercial is definitely Johnny Cash singing the song.

Hi Edith.
Nope. They sure don't. Bad times pass with the wind. (haven't heard that
song in awhile)
Sun is out here at the moment. It's around 90F. Cool front is coming in.
Temp is suppose to drop down to 55F tonight. I love it. First thing I'm
going to do when I get home is open all the windows.
Hurricane season lasts until November something. I'm not sure of the exact
date. The weather guys are already talking about another wave that may
become a storm.

That doesn't sound good. I remember when my daughter went to Oklahoma. I
believe it was September 1977. Elvis had just died.Lorten had just had a
storm that flattened buildings and the hail stones were as big as golf
balls.

Me too. It's a lovely time of year. My veranda is full of little yellow
leaves from the hanging beach tree. The leaves are gradually turning from
green to yellow. I hope the storms are soon over for you all.

It's not slang. It's just terminology. If S&G publish an
original tune, and others like it and also record it, they are
called 'covers'.

Bless you. (passes Edith a cotton hankie) It sure is.

That was a good year for me despite all the tragedy you mentioned. I was 16
and having a great deal of fun. Oklahoma has had worse storms since then.
A couple of years ago Oklahoma City and Lawton were hit by devasting
tornados. The worst to hit here (the Fort Smith area) was several years
ago. I wanted to move then. Time has a way of changing your mind. Until
the next big one. In reality there's no place like home. (sorry, terrible
cliche borrowed from Dorothy)
Funny you should mention Elvis. I bought Neil Young's new CD today and he
has a song about him. I'll send it to you.

Sounds so nice. The only color we've had on the trees around here is the
poison Ivy turning red and the brown leaves from the heat. With the cold
front it shouldn't be long. I'd love to go up to the northeast to see the
foliage. Still have hopes we may have a decent year where that's concerned
but doubtful since it's been so hot this late.

Oh. I had no idea.
You'll really need that vacation if you keep working this late.

Did you have a car, Tania? The people with whom my daughter was living with
in Lawton bought theor daughter a big car for her 16th birthday. We were
awed. I couldn't believe that a 16 year old would be safe behind the wheel.
Here you must be 18 before you even look at a car, then you are old enough
to take lessons.
Oklahoma has had worse storms since then.

I don't know how people get back on their feet after such storms, especially
when they lose eveything they have. I think I would just sit down on the
ground and waite for the end. It must be nerve racking.

Thank you. Neil is still on the go then.?

It won't be long now, all the trees will have no leaves at all and they'll
look gray and eerie. The only colours we'll have are the pines and the
different colour painted houses. Evevrything else turns to black and white,
like an old movie. It's a transformation unbelievable, then Spring comes and
lightens the atmospere. :0)

Here it's sixteen. Or on a farm, about six before they put 'em
to work driving the farm vehicles.

Of course he is. He's a hardy Canadian boy. Living in

You don't? Well I never. I thought the French took them over with them
during the war. That's what they said here.

Re: How about
You are wasting your time posting this here because < uk.local.*>
news groups, all of them, have been from the very beginning and will
be to the very end safe play areas for all sorts of raging nutters,
social malcontents, control freaks and malevolent beings.
You may feel that they should go elsewhere but where? The asylums
are all closed. Every so often they stop taking their medication and
go off their fucking heads. What would you have of them? Standing in
their back yards at midnight howling to the full moon and frightening
the shit out of the neighbours into the bargain? Have them running
around shafting masons, suspected vampires, werewolves, communists,
socialists, conservatives and women with vaginal warts by the dozen?
OR harmlessly making utter cunts of themselves in a uk.local group?
Lets face it what is one other cunt amongst the many?? I know what I
prefer!! The uk.local hierarchy of newsgroups is a valuable safety
valve which helps to keep society a wee bit more safe.
You may disagree. I would be interested to hear your opinion and no
doubt would the rest of the group. Thanks in advance.

I sure did. A 1962 Dodge Dart 330. Wish I had it now. I acquired it from
my aunt when I was 15 (although I wouldn't be legal to drive until I was 16
and passed a drivers test). The "three in the column" shifting took me a
couple of weeks to get down pat. After that it was smooth cruising. Before
my 17th birthday I had a Toyota Celica that I paid for myself.
A couple of years later the Celica was sold and I bought the first of two VW
bugs. It was more affordable with being married, school and a baby on the
way.
It's not unusual to buy kids here a car when they turn 16. My parents
didn't. They were firm believers that you should work for your own vehicle.
I was lucky I had my aunt.

It is. Worse for some. In 1996 the house I grew up in was destroyed by a
tornado. My parents rebuilt on the same site. The house that was lost was
over a hundred years old. They were able to salvage some things. My sister
and I climbed over debris to rescue photos.
> Thank you. Neil is still on the go then.?
Yup. I'll send it to you tonight. Sorry I've been so slow. It's been
really busy at work.
