Keswick: fun not permitted.
Keswick: the glorified shopping mall.

Don't try to have fun in Keswick. You're there to shop. Don't try to
undertake traditional pursuits, like dancing in the street, or playing live
music on acoustic instruments for people to enjoy. You're there to shop.

This is the message we got today, while we did what we do most years: bring
a few morris dance sides from other parts of the north of England, and
provide free entertainment for everyone who happens to be wandering about
Keswick's market place at the time. These passers-by enjoyed the music and
dancing so much they all stopped to watch, forming a big circle around the
performers. They gave us lots of money to pass on to the Great North Air
Ambulance (the charity we're collecting for this year). Many people clapped
and cheered and passed favourable comments.

What did they do wrong? They stopped spending money in the shops for three
quarters of an hour. So certain misanthropic shopkeepers took umbrage and
came and complained. Someone even suggested getting the town council to put
a blanket ban on any live entertainment in the streets of Keswick. Well,
gosh, we can't go letting the punters have fun, can we? Can't go taking
their minds off shopping.

So we went back down to the Lakeside, which is one of our all-time favourite
dancing venues. Scenery to die for; a nice big flat space with loads of room
for dancing; a convenient tearoom; even nearby toilets. The tearoom people
are always happy to have us - partly, I suppose, because they do sell us an
awful lot of afternoon teas, but there ya go... However, this time it was a
certain person living nearby who came out and complained that our (acoustic,
unamplified) music was making so much noise he and his friends couldn't hear
the racing on TV. I despair. I am lost for words. Aaaaaaaaggghhh....

Yeah, sure, make fun of morris dancers if you like, but live and let live
FFS. I can see a day in the not too distant future when some of these people
will be saying things like, "d'you remember when we used to see morris
dancers in the streets? I wonder what happened to them?" What, indeed?

To be fair, it was only a very small minority who tried to spoil the day for
us, but we know who they are, and we won't forget.

And we still had a great day, despite their efforts to ruin things. Thanks
to everyone who *did* appreciate having us around, and especially to those
who dotated to a very worthwhile cause.

About the poem "Rain" on your website, Ally

Fluer *Adock, briefly one of Barry Crumps 5 wives, was a poet who wrote
poems about , quote:-

Adcocks poetry ranges across themes from the painful negotiations of
relationships to ecological, political and gender concerns

I've always felt that the poem, Rain, was written by a woman. Could it have
been Fleur's poem in reality, do you think?

Being a kind and polite person you are not really equipped to deal with
these people properly.

The appropriate reply to such complaints is "f*** off you miserable
bastard". Possibly with a reminder that they have no idea who you are but
you know where they have their shop.

It's typical of the way all local culture is considered secondary to sucking
money out of anybody who comes in reach.

Tourism is said to fund the Lake District but it was fine before the
tourists arrived, they fund the tourist business. It's bad enough having
your home town flooded with noisy strangers every year without a lot of
offcomers and traitors closing useful local shops to pander to the wandering
rubberneckers. Without tourism Keswick might support less pubs and
restaurants but at least the survivors would be worth visiting.

You're absolutely right, of course. But being nice polite women, we are
writing a stern letter to the town council.

I will not be using Keswick as my 'tourist' base next fall then. Can you
recommend somewhere? Even though Ulverston is a little far south, looks
nice.

Please don't give up on it. We're all still very fond of Keswick: it's just
one or two stupid people who are trying to make things difficult. If we let
them get away with it, it'll mean fewer of the 'sensible' people (like us,
of course!) will be left, and more of the commercially-minded incomers will
remain to cause even more havoc. We have to try to help Keswick before it
smothers under the weight of infinite outdoor-gear shops.

If I had to recommend anywhere else, though, I'd suggest Cockermouth first,
as it's slightly more peaceful and less touristy, and yet has its own unique
charm, and is near enough all the other places you might like to visit.
Alternatively, if you really want to be in the thick of it, try Ambleside.
It's right in the middle of the Lake District; it has loads of interesting
shops; it's on the shore of the biggest lake (Windermere) with all sorts of
(somewhat slow, nowadays) water sports; it's in the midst of good walking
country.

Ulverston is a lovely spot. We've been down there to dance at their big folk
festival a few times and I like it very much. It's a lot bigger than
Keswick, though, and is more of a straightforward working town. I'd
certainly recommend a visit there, though it might not be the best place to
base yourself as it is, as you say, rather far south. It would also make
boinks a bit more strenuous for most of us, (though perfect for Kezzi who's
just down the road!).

A great idea. Ulverston was where some of my ancestors lived
when they moved down from Ennerdale.

I'll stay at The Grange Hotel though and take the train.

Actually, I probably won't be there.

Of course Keswick is smashing. I want it to stay that way: that's why I've
been complaining about these old misanthropes who try to stop people having
fun.

I've got to go to Kendal tomorrow. It's over a year since I've been there. I
like Kendal (apart from the traffic). Anything been happening there in the

Since you put it like that...

I thought Keswick was lovely if a bit commerical. When I stood in front of
Moot Hall planning my walk for the day the commercially-minded left my
thoughts and the fells took over. I agree it's worth not giving up on.

Someone else suggested Ambleside to me not long ago. Cockermouth appeals to
me. I like the "less touristy" aspect. Fine words from a tourist, huh.

I like what I've seen on the net and read of the area. There are many
places close to Ulverston that I want to see. Actually, Grange-Over-Sands
over to Ravenglass ( getting lost on A590 and A595 would be just fine with
me). An adventure around every corner.

Me too. Keswick and Grasmere...but I find Keswick is sentral to everything
and easier to plan a day out. Coniston could be an alternative with "The Old
Man" to climb. I like Keswick because you get it all. Buses go in all
directions from there. Cockermouth is only a short drive away and less
touristy. Workington is more commercial for shopping and is on the coast.
Whitehaven has become a nice coastal town. Orly and I thought of staying
there but found no cottage in the town centre. Only on the tops, which meant
driving down every day. In Keswick centre there are no hills so it's easy to
park the car at the cottage and use it less.

Edith.

Here's a cottage you might appreciate, Tania. "La'al Yan" which means
"Little One" has a parking spot and isn't too expensive.

Hmm. And even more reason for a southern boink. Couldn't we arrange for Rex
and Tania to be in Ulverston at the same time? Easy for Kezzi for whom long
distance travel can be a problem, and the rest of us could make the journey
south for a change.

You don't have to be in Keswick to be able to take the occasional sample
of it.

Threlkeld (4 miles east of Keswick is very conveniently located just off
the A66 from Penrith with easy access to all parts - withouth (WITHOUT)

Yes, it isn't a town as one thinks of a town. I've bought warm clothes and
boots there at a decent bargain compared to Norway so I'm glad the shops are
there now that Workington Saturday Market has halted to a sizzle. I miss
that market something awful. I brought Orly and my son over just to
experience it and it was gone-made into a car park. What the! Twuz t'best
market around when I lived at home. I bought a blue tea service to bring
over to Norway with me from one of the stalls on Hagg Hill.

The Lowthers are a big landowning family somewhere near Penrith IIRC. Hang

Thanks, Ally. They say that scent is the most enduring memory!

When I left for my trip from LaGuardia in NY I had a long layover in
Philly and as I browsed int he Duty Free shopping area I realised that
I'd forgotten to bring my fragrance, but I found some Elizabeth Arden
Green Tea, and treated myself to a small bottle at a very good price.
Every time I use a squirt, I now remember my trip. I did the same on a
trip to Spain in '99 and now can be transported mentally back to a heady
evening on the Costa Dorada by a whiff of Clinique Aromatics!!

The pub was one door off, hasd't ben opened for ages and it looks like a
pirates den. People say it used to be one of the best. Sad.

You're way past your 'barmaid' days. You'll be doing well if you
can get a job as a serving wench.

Too many small country pubs are closing down. There's no money in selling a
few pints to locals who live near enough to walk there. It's the clamp-down
on drink-driving to blame, I think. The pubs that survive are those that
sell out and build big extensions where they install bland restaurants which
become popular with beige-attired elderly people. The Ship at Dovenby and
the Greyhound at Bothel spring instantly to mind, but there are loads of
others.

Sad indeed. I don't know what the solution is. I don't want to go back to
the days of hoardes of drunk drivers emerging from country pubs at closing
time...

No you couldn't. You couldn't manage either the stairs nor the
bed making. You'd be out of business in a week.

You'd be better as a radio talk show host. Except who would
listen? And what language would it be in? Maybe a character on a
radio drama - that's a good idea!

I think we should just turn her into an international cult figure. She just
needs to carry on doing what she does here, but do it to a wider audience.
She'd be a star. And as her agent I'd get 50%.

Good afternoon, Edith. Such a lovely morning here we have been gardening
since breakfast. BUT the wind is getting stronger and we are promised some
of the gales and rain the NW has been enjoying. Of course by the time it
gets to our side of the pennines, it will be tamed and relatively dry.
Trust you are well?

Good Afternoon da'lin. We have clear blue skies today and sunshine. temp
+16c which is perfect for moi and hardly a breeze. How I love global
warming. Hey! Now keep your Erica off my case.
Otherwise, I'm fine. I plan to cycle to town with me bike baskets full of
empty bottles. Honest, if I were the least bit vain I swear from a distance
I would look like second hand rose. I feel like I work for the Council with
all this blooming recycling stuff going on. "Hey! Council man. Where's me
wages.?"

I am very nosey about your broadcasting experience. I could easily shove my
nose deeply into every sentence.

e.g.. What happens first. Does the studio call you and say - We need sounds
of a wild leopard eating somebody's thigh-can you come down to the studio
immediately-and when you arrive do you have to stand in front of a square
microphone that hangs from the ceiling, and growl? Is that how it works?

I think you must have mixed me up with another of your friends. All I have
done are broadcasts on local; radio - BBc Northants, Leicester and
Lincolnshire, and on commercial radio Rutland These were promotional
broadcasts for my books. I was invited back by Northants to do two phone in
programmes - one of pharmacy and one on taxidermy. Maybe the last one is
where you got the idea for animal sounds?

I know. I'm not really expecting anyone to consider my ravings, especially
those who live far away. I'll have to dance to your tunes next time. I'll
start saving tomorrow. If only Ryanair don't go bankrupt. I hear they
haven't paid their airhostess'.

I always get lost. I get lost even when I'm not lost. I think it's a curse

Thanks, Ally. Lots of good information.

Something freaky is going on with my news server. I know I replied to this
post already but see it nowhere. The less touristy areas appeal to me.
Yeah, I know those are fine words from a tourist. I've thought about
dividing my time between the northern lakes, Cumbrian coast and down around
the Cartmel area. Before I make it down to Cumbria I'll be spending several
days in Scotland. Edinburgh to Inverness then south taking in all that I
can along the way.

It's amazing how fast the weather changes recently. The cold front is coming
in with a bang. We are having a heck of a storm at the moment.
Transformers blown all over town according to the radio. Time to go home
but think I'll wait a little bit

Early Spring. Get insured for broken bones. Our pavements etc are leathal in
early Spring. I'll tell you when it's nicest if you wish. End of Spring is
dirty snow, icey roads, very depressing. Not worth spending money on. I'll
let you know ahead of time when the season has decided to be good to us. In
the meantime, keep saving your pennies.

Me too-and the boat from Kristiansand to Newcastle now sails on a Wednesday
or Sunday and back again on Monday or Thursday messing up our holiday plans
completely. No cottage owner will rent out from anything but Saturday to
Saturday or Friday to Friday. Try booking for a week + the weeken and the
answer is no, sorry. Can't do.:0(

Are you serious. Some days only cost one bob to travel and you can return on
one of those days too. Booking 2-3 weeks ahead of time should be ok but you
know best. Maybe you have different rules over there.

What do you call early Spring, Ally. I'm thinking such.

Jan/Feb/March/April = winter

May/June = Spring

July/August/September = summer (supposed to be)

October/November = Autumn

December/January/February/March = winter

Do your best.
Edith.

PS. Take it over to email please.

It's the pilots and maintenance people that you really need to
pay. And the fuel supplier.

What is it with ferry schedules anyway? I was going to drive the

the most ridiculous schedule. I gave up on them.

Hello Ron.

Today on my way to town, I pedalled behind a bus and saved 50 bob.

Tomorrow I'm going to cycle behind a taxi and save 30

Duh! Hits head against wall then climbs the dancers.

Starting to. I'm new at paying for a news server. I've always just used my
local ISP and outlook express. That started to go really down hill once I
moved out here "in the country".

I'll give Newsfeeds a couple of weeks. If there are any more problems I'll
look for another one.

usenet-access.com $6 a month, good retention even on binary groups. You do
end up with a newsfeeds, com sig though.

I can't seem to find a good free one with binaries. $6 is cheaper than what
I'm paying now. For better service and $60 less a year y'all may just
have to tolerate my newsfeed sig.
