Southern Railway Artifacts
Hi Group,

I've prepared a page of Southern Artifacts I found on an abandoned
railway today, and I wondered if some of you "in the know" might be
able to identify some of them.

Some of the text below the pictures may be a tad boring but it gives
you an idea of where I found it and puts things into context a bit.

You can start from picture one and work your way through by clicking
"next" or you can click individually.

I'm particularly interested in some of the S&T equipment (or what I
suspect to be).

I've probably assumed wrongly on a lot of things but I hope that
somebody might be able to help.

Many Thanks,

If the item in picture 1 was mounted on the ground it could be some
kind of reference point for surveying.
The bolt in the centre of it looks similar to some used nowadays and
the yellow surround could be to make it easy to find (spray paint is
the modern substitute!)

The official reason was relief of congestion at Haywards Heath, if the
Haywards Heath - Seaford local trains had reversed there. The real reason
was probably that the Southern intended to electrify the East Grinstead and
Oxted lines, when it would not have been difficult to electrify East
Grinstead to Horsted Keynes, and develop an alternative electric route to
Brighton, bypassing Balcombe Tunnel and the Ouse viaduct.
