Stuff at Crewe: what was it?
At Crewe Works last Saturday, I saw two locos that I cannot identify.
Can anyone here help?
Firstly, a steam loco. I noted it as 6880, but that's not in any of my
listings at home, so I suspect I mis-wrote it.
The second was what looked like a petrol-driven four-wheeler. It was
in BR black and carried 15100. I know that's right, as I photographed
it. Is this some industrial thing *pretending* to be "big railway"?
With thanks,
PhilD

I don't recall anything with a number like that. Nearest I can offer is
5690 Leander - a big maroon one with a black nose. Ring a bell?

Yes it is. The LNER built some petrol shunters, and when BR came about,
they were renumbered into a series that ended at 15099. The one you saw
was built to much the same design, but used in industry all its working
life. Its original number was 2129, but in retirement, it has been given
the naughty number 15100.
I've posted a pic of this today in alt.binaries.pictures.rail, IYI.

Mmmm, maybe. I remember seeing Leander, but don't remember whether or
not I wrote it down (properly). My notes are at home and I'm not at
the moment! It wasn't easy trying to note things at the same time as
looking after a very excitable 6 year old ("I want to go over here",
"let's go and look at that", "what's that for?", "can I buy this?", and
so on. No doubt others have been there too!).

Ah! That's a good way for industrial loco owners to generate interest
in their item. If it looks like "big railway", more people will take
an interest. Thank you for your assistance.

No, you wrote it correctly, but it's not much of a loco yet.

6880 is Betton Grange - the 81st member of the GWR Grange class which
is being built at Llangollen using the boiler from 7927 Willington
Hall. According to their website (www.6880.co.uk) the plan was to have
the cab complete in time for Crewe Open Day, so this is probably what
you saw.

Ah-ha! Thanks (and to AdrianH). I remember seeing a cab around a trade
stand (no doubt theirs, eh?). That would have been it.
Sorted.
