Carlisle to Gatwick
My daughter gets married this week-end and has decided where she wants
to go on honeymoon, the problem is she can only fly from Gatwick. Anyone
out there know the easiest way to Gatwick from Carlisle , times and
prices? I did go onto a sight called "Trainline" but their answer was
not possible. Thanks for any help.

The best route i would imagine would be to go from Carlisle to Watford
Junction on Virgin Trains and catch a Southern train direct to Gatwick
from there. Either that or go into Euston, take the tube to Victoria
and use Gatwick Express. You can find prices at www.qjump.co.uk if
thetrainline.com doesn't work.

Carlisle/Euston/Victoria/Gatwick
You don't say what times. Here's a sample from
http://nrekb.com/times_fares/
CARLISLE dep 14:28
LONDON EUSTON arr 18:38
LONDON EUSTON dep 18:38
LONDON VICTORIA arr 19:15
LONDON VICTORIA dep 19:15
GATWICK AIRPORT arr 19:45

If by easiest you mean the route with the least changes then she's
either looking at a Virgin train from Carlisle to London Euston and then
across London by tube to Victoria for the train to Gatwick, or one train
to Newcastle, change for a GNER service to London Kings Cross. From KX
it's about a 250 yard walk to Kings Cross Thameslink from where there
are direct trains to Gatwick.
A Saver Return is 83.50, but if she's going/coming back through central
London during weekday peak times it may not be valid. Post the times of
her flight(s) and we can give you more info re times.

Seconded. It would take around 3.5 to 4 hours to get to Watford
Junction, and then a further hour to reach Gatwick (with anything from
zero to an hour's break at Watford, depending on the timetables).
A Saver Return (valid on most trains) is 83.50.
She could travel more cheaply by buying advance purchase tickets which
are only valid on a specified train at a specified time, but this
might not be advisable, since the return flight being late could cause
her to miss the return train (and then the cheapest walk-on single for
the next available train would cost 82.50).

Worth pointing out that not many trains from Carlisle stop at Watford.
At least, they're not scheduled to.

And there's no direct Watford-Gatwick service on Sundays.

The bahn.de planner comes up with some oddities such as
| Carlisle | | 14:11 | --- |RE MB
| Reading | 18:41 | 19:12 | --- |
| Gatwick Airport | 20:31 | | |
| Carlisle | | 15:08 | --- |RE MB
| Birmingham New Str | 18:03 | 18:33 | --- |RE MB
| Gatwick Airport | 21:20 | | |
but otherwise it all seems to involve cross-London underground
connections. Presumably those arrivals are too late to be of use
anyway, even if they are really running?

The easiest way would probably be to take the train to Edinburgh or
Glasgow and fly easyJet to Gatwick. At this notice, though, the
flights probably cost a bomb.

Hmmm, Traveline has some "interesting" options, including train to
Newcastle and fly to Gatwick.
Here's a frantic solution which it also offers:
* from Carlisle take the 05:05 Aberdeen coach as far as Glasgow.
* Airport bus to GLA. Flight BD3 to Heathrow.
* Coach 707 to Gatwick.
Boggle.

Hey, don't knock it! When visiting the Lake District in January this
year, it worked out quicker (and only a tad more expensive) to fly from
Manston to Glasgow (can't do that now, but you can still fly from
Gatwick), get the bus to Glasgow Central, train to Penrith and bus to
Keswick than to get the train to London, go across London on the tube,
Virgin to Penrith and bus to Keswick. Think it saved something like an
hour or so. Carlisle would be quicker still, seeing as it's closer to
Glasgow and further from London.
Of course, all that only works out if your connections are good - they
were in this case.

I'd suggest WCML from Carlisle to Man Picc, train from there to
Manchester Airport, and fly to Gatwick.
