Re: Re: Two questions concerning RAILSCENE and Rhymney Railway
(Cardiff)
Bob,
Without wishing to sound pedantic, the correct spelling is Rhymney.
(Rumney is a district of Cardiff.) This might help you in your Google
search.
If it's any help, my father was brought up in Adamsdown very close to
the cemetery to which you refer. I can fire any questions at him if you
wish.
Hope this helps,
Nick.
Hello Nick,
Thank you for pointing out that glaring error in my post, I did indeed mean
the Rhymney Railway, not the Rumney. It's been a long week!
I am collecting pictures and maps of the area, but am particularly after anything
that refers to/shows the old Rhymney Railway Bridge that crossed Adam Street in Adamsdown. From what I have found out from the few references in a couple of books, the branch used to come down from near Queen Street Station to Adamsdown, and cross over Adam Street right by where the Court is now. It then used to continue down the back of the Cemetary. Where it went from there I do not know.
When was the bridge built and knocked down? Where did the line go? Did it go to the Timber Yard in Splott (which is no more) I should be very grateful for any information, no matter how obscure.
Regards,
Bob

Bob
From what I understand, the RR's station in central Cardiff was at The Parade,
just north of Newport Road. The current Queen Streen station was the Taff Vale
station, even though the modern alignment of track and station could make one
think it was built to serve the Rhymney rather than the TVR which swings away to
the north west.
From The Parade, of which I don't think any trace remains, the RR crossed
Newport Road on a bridge and followed roughly the course of today's Fitzalan Rd
and Knox Rd on an embankment. At least I *think* I remember a disused embankment
there as a child in the 1970s. From there it skirted the southern side of the
'Old Cemetary' before crossing the SWR mainline a little to the west of the
current Windsor Road bridge.
From there it bacame a mass of sidings along both sides of the Bute East Dock.
Looking at www.old-maps.co.uk (especially the enlarged view) it seems to run
past the Timber Yard but whether it had a connection I can't tell.
I don't know if there were any passenger stations further south than The Parade.
There's something shown as a terminus on the east side of the East Dock just
where it curves, but that could belong to any of the railway companies -
probably the SWR/GWR as it looks as if it belongs to a spur off the main line.
