Whatever happened to Turton Platt?
Component suppliers may not have been among the glitterati
of the railway industry, but in some cases they contributed
to the appearance of artefacts we discuss at length.

Turton Platt made buffers. I have a drawing which mentions
them on Deltic locos, but also notes that they may be
replaced, with adjustments, by Oleos. It seems all the
Deltics received Oleos, certainly they are on the survivors.

I'd like to know the detail dimensions of the original
Turton Platt types fitted when built. Does anyone know
whether the business or its archives still exist? Or of
a surviving T-P oval-head buffer, perhaps on a different
type of vehicle, which I could check?

Cheers,
Francis K.

Have you Googled for Turton & Platt? There are several references, one
of them here:
http://www.lnwrs.org.uk/Members/Jour0308/jour030817.php

Written in 2002, that includes:
The works of Turton and Platt was beside that of the Yorkshire Engine
Co. Ltd at Meadow Hall, Sheffield, and was founded before 1860. It
remained in business until only a year or two ago. They were one of the
leading suppliers of railway springs leaf and coil for wheel sets,
bogies and buffers, with buffer castings and assemblies, and delivered
all over the world.

I did do, a few months ago, but didn't come up with what
you've provided! Thanks.
