Two questions concerning RAILSCENE and Rumney Railway (Cardiff)
Hello all!

Has anyone got the old Railscene Videos (that were of UK trains in the 80's)
The videos included extensive Cab rides and the such. I am wondering if
anyone converted them to DVD and if they have, would very be willing to
post them?

I have seven of the videos, and only need a new Video Player to do the job
myself. I would love to digitize the Cardiff to Portsmouth Cab Ride (47 minutes
of footage!) and clean it up.

My PC is well equipped to do the job, but I cannot afford a new Video Player yet.
I certainly won't pay through the nose for someone else to do it!

Is there any call for Railscene videos to be posted? If there is then shall we start a
discussion on it?

Secondly,

I was wondering if anyone has any information at all on the old Rumney Railway
in Cardiff - Decent maps/photos/timetables - anything! - I have looked on Google
and eBay and there does not seem to be about. I am particularly interested about
hearing from people who remember the branch of the Rumney that ran from Queen
Street (or thereabouts), through where Brunel House now stands, and down across
Adamsdown, along the back of the cemetary. This was about 45 years ago.

Photos of the area would be great. Photos of the railway taken from Adamsdown
would be just amazing. I would consider paying for the originals.

I don't want much do I? lol

Cheers !

Bob

Bob,

Without wishing to sound pedantic, the correct spelling is Rhymney.
(Rumney is a district of Cardiff.) This might help you in your Google
search.

If it's any help, my father was brought up in Adamsdown very close to
the cemetery to which you refer. I can fire any questions at him if you
wish.

Hope this helps,

Nick.

I think that Kingfisher Video now have the rights to all these:

http://www.railwayvideo.com/railscene.htm

Some are available on DVD.

Out of interest, I believe that the video used in many of Ashley
Greenup's excellent driving simulator PC games 'Cab View Driver' is
actually from the Railscene collection. The Crewe- Holyhead one I have
certainly is, circa 1988 with Speedlink freights passing in the other
direction,
etc.

Don't know if it will help but I have a book showing most (or possibly
all) of the Rhymney railway stations at various dates. I will not part
with it but I may be able to help with descriptions.

Now if you wanted to know anything about Brithdir in the early 60's I
could really help. I used to spend most of my out of school times in the
signal box. I even got to the point that, depending who was on duty at
the boxes each side, the signal man would go out into the sidings to
couple up the brake pipes for the next days timed working of old coal
tip material, leaving me to run the box.

In those days the rule books were not as rigidly enforced

It's more confusing than that, as there was once a Rumney Railway
in the area which was entirely distinct from the Rhymney Railway.
The Rumney - the "old Rumney" was one of the early railways of
South Wales and was more-or-less torpid by the 1870s - its route was
then used for a later railway. I'm not entirely sure which company
too it over - the Midland, I think. Whoever did buy it, legend
says that they'd thought they were getting the Rhymney...

Re: Two questions concerning RAILSCENE and Rumney Railway (Cardiff)
Hello Nick,

Thank you for pointing out that glaring error in my post, I did indeed
mean
the Rhymney Railway, not the Rumney. It's been a long week!

I am collecting pictures and maps of the area, but am particularly
after anything
that refers to/shows the old Rhymney Railway Bridge that crossed Adam
Street in Adamsdown. From what I have found out from the few
references in a couple of books, the branch used to come down from near
Queen Street Station to Adamsdown, and cross over Adam Street right by
where the Court is now. It then used to continue down the back of the
Cemetary. Where it went from there I do not know.

When was the bridge built and knocked down? Where did the line go?
Did it go to the Timber Yard in Splott (which is no more) I should be
very grateful for any information, no matter how obscure.

Charlie - Thanks for your response - Some excellent information there -
I will look into Kingfisher and the Pc game in more detail - Thank you
very much. Maybe I should hold off converting these videos to DVD and
posting them for now - Don't want to infringe any copyrights now do I?
- I am just preserving the Cardiff footage for myself more than
anything.

Mike - Thanks for your response - I am specifically looking for
information/photos etc on the Rhymney line from Queen Street-ish to
Splott.
I know that the line ran from behind what is now the Multistory
carpark, over Newport Road, adjacent and to the left of the current
bridge (from the perspective of looking down Station Terrace), through
where Brunel House now stands, across the bridge at Adam Street, and
down the back of the Adamsdown (now desecrated - bloody kids) Cemetary.

I would be very grateful if you could tell me the title of the book,
and the ISBN if it has one.

Thank you very much for all your replies.

Regards,

Bob

The line (apparently) branched off to the north of Queen st station,
ran along an embankment/viaduct, crossed Adam st and ran south (past
the cemetery), crossing the SWM to the west of Windsor Road bridge. It
then ran along an embankment/viaduct above what was Tyndall Street
Crossing signal box and down an incline to Roath Basin Junction, past
East dock loco sheds. Shunters would meet the train at the foot of the
incline and "cut off" wagons as required.

It didn't serve the timber yards in Splott as such, although my old man
(who was a shunter at Cardiff Tidal, Newtown and on the docks - my
uncle was a signalman at Tyndall st) thinks they were served by lines
radiating from the Tyndall st area.

I was trying to fathom how far north of Queen st the line branched off.
I'm calling in to look at some photos tomorrow, but he did say that
whilst dropping off from trains working that line, they would walk down
the tracks to Queen st.

Traffic using the line were workings such as the CP8 pilot which
operated from Radyr Yard to the docks, carrying dolomite for East Moors
steel works and the standard coal traffic. I don't know (yet) when the
bridge was knocked down I'm afraid.
