More Midland Arson?
Yet another overnight Cabling fire at Water Orton. Someone has really been
upset by the railway,I think.
New St - Derby and New St - Nuneaton blocked.

It sounds like someone who knows what they're doing.
I presume the police are working with railway companies to seek out
aggrieved ex-staff, and look for potential next targets to watch them.

Pardon the ignorace here but I assume you don't mean an electrical fire -
someone is going out torching a bundle of signalling cables by the
railside?

There were some of those a year or two ago. Have they continued and
not been reported (or at least as likely I have not noticed
reports), or is there perhaps a new offensive?

The latter, possibly.
Today's Birmingham Sunday Mercury lists the incidents as follows...
2004
June 14: Kinsgbury
June 21: Three separate incidents at Coleshill, Lea Marston and
Kinsgbury South Jct
June 25: Kitts Green (Lea Hall)
June 25: Bickenhill (Birmingham International)
July 4: Barnt Green
2005
Sept 8: Garretts Green (between Lea Hall and Marston Green)
Sept 9: Water Orton
The same report says that in the Sept 8th incident "a train driver
noticed a fire on the trackside at Garretts Green at 1:40am on Thursday.
A lock on a signal cabinet had been smashed and the inside circuits and
controls set alight".
And in the Sept 9th incident "at 10.30pm on Friday a passing train
driver noticed trackside equipment on fire near the main Birmingham to
Derby line near Water Orton station...".
"Detective Chief Inspector John Sidebottom, of British Transport Police,
said: 'At this stage we are linking the two attacks. They are very
similar to last year's attacks but I cannot confirm a link to these
until forensic tests have been carried out.'"
The report also says that "In some of the attacks, cables are understood
to have been removed from lineside boxes and severed before being
replaced - making it difficult for engineers to locate the fault."

I remember something similar happening in the mid 90's at Soho/Smethwick. A whole relay room was
vandalised. Temporary Block Working was in place for quite a while (weeks I think!).

According to "Railnews" (at
<http://www.railnews.co.uk/news.aspx?id=1354>), police are indeed
involved, though their lines of enquiry are not specified.
