At least 29 people have been injured in a collision involving three
underground trains in the Spanish city of Valencia, local officials say.
Four people were seriously hurt, councillor Miguel Peralta said.
The crash happened on the Number One line 5km (3 miles) south-east of the
city centre.
Mr Peralta said the first train had been stationary. The second used its
emergency brakes to avoid a collision, but was hit by a third train.
The force of the impact severely damaged the drivers' cabs at the front of
the last train and at the rear of the second train.
A 50-year-old man and a 60-year-old woman were among those seriously injured,
the Efe news agency reports.

The first thing to say is that this happened on a surface section of
line, between Paiporta and Picanya. Picanya is the station I use as
my park-and-ride when visiting Valencia; I know the location well.

Which just goes to show that you can't believe everything you read.
The trains are on a (roughly - 7 trains per hour) ten minute
frequency.
Train number 1 had broken down in Picanya station. Train number 2
had stopped correctly at the signal protecting it. Train no. 3
SPADded the signal protecting train 2 and only just failed to stop
in time - a very minor collision. While this was all being sorted
out, train number 4 SPADded as well, only this time it hit the rear
of train 3 with some force, driving it into train 2.
The driver of train 4 has lost a leg, and three others are still in
hospital, with a reported total of 37 injured.
Investigations are being focussed on a wrong-side signal failure
(official line), although this is a section notorious for poor
adhesion. Wednesday evening / Thursday morning, we had the first
heavy rain for several months, and it could be that the rail had
dried just to that point where it is slippery with slime (my
speculation).
Trains are suspended between Valencia Sud and Torrent.
