OT: can anyone recommend an Inn with character near Plymouth?
I'm trying to find (and failing) a pub near Plymouth with accommodation
and character for a couple of nights next week. Tourist info have not
been any use and I've spent hours on the web. I stayed in the Mildmay
Colours last time but would prefer somewhere different, any suggestions?
(BTW, there is a tenuous link to DIY)

Sorry I can't actually answer the question 'cos I don't live down there but
perhaps contact the Plymouth branch of CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale)
http://www.plymouthcamra.co.uk/
I'm sure that they'll be only too pleased to help.

What do you mean by near? There is The Old Church House at Torbryan
which is probably less than 30 miles:

http://www.smoothhound.co.uk/
has about 30 on its list. I've used them for low-budget (it is only
advancing years that make tents less appealing) accomodation and never had
a bad'un. Mildmay appears to be the only true inn, but some accomodations
have licensed bars and should you need to stroll down the road for
fortification, I suspect you will find yourself within five minutes of a
suitable hostelry.

You don't say how far you are prepared to travel. For instance, the Nobody
Inn at
Doddiscombeleigh is lovely, but it is nearer to Exeter than Plymouth, though
the
A38 is accessible. I'm not sure how much you wish to spend, nor whether an
Hotel would
do. For instance, the Langdon Court Hotel at Down Thomas, the Kitley House
hotel
at Yealmpton and the Boringdon Arms at Turnchapel, Plymouth, are all old
country
houses, and the first two for sure are open to non-residents for drinking.
These are all
convenient for Plymouth.
I don't stay in accomodation in the Plymouth area since I live here,
so all I can comment
on is the character side of things. You might like to look at the Tower Inn,
Slapton ( too far
probably ), the Church House Inn, Churchstow, The Dolpin Inn, Kingston ( in
small village
characterful, and not too far from Plymouth ), the Millbrook Inn, South
Pool.
I believe there is a new eating type pub in Holbeton, across from the
Mildmay Colours, called
the Dartmor Union Inn: I haven't been to it, so can't comment on it.
You could have a look a what's available in the village of Modbury, as
that's got a bit of character
is within range of Plymouth, and has a few places you could stay. I'm
running out of nearby
ideas, maybe the New Inn, Ermington would be worth a look ( or is it
Ugborough??!! ).
Haven't been there myself, but maybe the Port Light Inn, Malborough is worth
a look: a little way
from Plymouth, but a lovely drive.
have a look at this site, www.pub-rooms.co.uk/Southwest/Devon/devon.htm
and DYOR research1

How close does it have to be to Plymouth? Found an superb B&B just south of
Exeter earlier this year; about a mile or so down a single track road, in a
steeply wooded valley. Absolute peace and quiet. Village pub about a mile
away with an excellent and inspired menu.

Thanks Andy for the detailed reply (and everyone else!). I need to get
in and out of Plymouth a few times so need to stay fairly near.
The Langdon Court and Kitley look great but a little too pricey,
although I'll consult with SWMBO about Boringdon.
The pub-rooms site looks promising, I don't understand why I couldn't
find it myself.

OK, I would like to retract the Port Light Inn at Malborough from my list,
as apparently it's had a character bypass, but possibly add the Exeter Inn
at Modbury as a new candidate( DYOR ). The Boringdon Arms is the most
convenient for
Plymouth on my list, it's actually on the outskirts. They've got a suit of
armour
in the hallway, it's an old manor house type of place. I've never stayed
there.

OP be damned :-) - please tell me more! I was looking for somewhere to stay
just outside Exeter myself. My email (despite its look) is valid if you
don't wish to post.

Thanks again Andy. The Exeter Arms looks spot-on so I've just booked for
the first night and will take pot-luck on the second.
BTW, there may be confusion between Boringdon Hall and Boringdon Arms -
I should imagine it's the Hall that has the suit of armour. We may stay
there on the second night if the Exeter Arms is disappointing.

Aah yes, Boringdon Hall is the place I meant, it's in Plympton, The
Boringdon
Arms is a couple of miles away.
Good Luck,
