Good News
I had a check up at the doctors this morning - they are checking on everyone
these days. My body weight/ height ratio is spot on at 25 - or so she says.
My BP is only 130/70, which she tells me is good for a 20 year old. It
looks as if I'm here for the long haul.

You are just jealous, Edith. Your miss-spent youth has caught up with you.
All that booze, all that singing in smokey nightclubs and pubs, to say
nothing of the sex. You're just jealous you are. I'm going back to my one

I know that, Rex. I have never been so - yukky - since I discovered
computers and uklc. You see you are all the only friends I have. I can smile
and chat with people here but I keep them at lengths pace which means I
don't invite them to my home and I don't go to there's. If it sounds sad, it
isn't. I've done my time in that area. I've found my way back to my own
culture through you people who have helped me enormously. Thank you.

Yes please. I preffer to have my feet placed firmly on the ground these
days. How about at Ian E's place. He seems to think he's too fine to mosey
around among us any more so we could pop in and pull him down a peg or two

We could all go halves and rent a big house and do our own thing from there.

Oh what a disappointment. I thought "vauage" was some Norsk slang for one's
bahookie or what JP was recently describing (in her daughter's words) as a
"tush". Or worse.
I think I may use it that way anyway. You can never have enough words for

Good morning, Edith. Trust you to lower the tone then dive for cover.
Lovely morning here in Rutland but it's started disastrously for me. I will
not relate the first two problems - not enough bandwidth! But the car goes
in for its MOT this afternoon and I'm praying that's not the third disaster.

Sorry you are not feeling too good - morning after the night before, is it?
Briefly my two disasters involve the shower. As you probably know, we are
refitting the shower room so we are stuck with showering in the downstairs
bath by using the hose attached to the taps.
I had my shower and tried to rinse the bath by turning on the shower while
it rested on the bath rack. I was too heavy handed and the shower hose took
on a life of its own. It writhed about like a demented snake and wet the
entire bath room. The windows, the loo roll and even the ceiling., the
mirror, etc. I cleaned it all up before Erica came down. Or I thought I had.
I did not check the loo roll which she found was wringing wet!
Secondly I inadvertantly put the kitchen cold tap on while Erica was
showering. She yelled because the water was suddenly boiling hot. I am not
popular.
Rex - Walking disaster area this morning. Hopes to do better this
afternoon.

lol. Bless you, lad. It's just one of those days., hey. We all have them.
They always come around when we least need them.
I fell asleep on the sofa under an ida down. Not like me to sleep in the
middle of the day unless I'm brewing a cold. Think I'll brew up a lemsip
powder if I can find one. I usually buy a packet in England then half it
with Orly. We buy all sorts and when we get back we half everything, except
for chocolate, that stays in MY flat ; I'm no fool.
Edith Brewing peppermint tea and lemsip.

You need to be physically and mentally relaxed.
If you stand up, your pulse will go up.

If you worry about it, it will go up.

Nope. I've been in the sofa under a blanket all day probably brewing a cold,
pain in back of head and neck.
Huh! Turned out to be migraine which I haven't had for quite a while.
There'll be thunder storms here within 4 days, I bet you a bov.

I am sorry you have migraine. I used to get it as a student but not any
more. Your day went sour, mine improved (Thank goodness)
The car sailed through its MOT. The shower has arrived and has been
collected, now it just wants fitting! Looks like being a busy weekend.
Hope you soon feel better.

Oh I hope you had better luck than I did. Went for the MOT yesterday but it
failed and had to go back today for some repairs. Much as I love
Cockermouth, you can run out of things to do there while awaiting the return
of a car. Yesterday I did a circuit of all the charity shops and had a very
nice large latte in Cafe Merienda in Station Street. Today my plan to sit by
the river and read was scuppered by the rain, so I popped into the WI market
and chatted to a friend who has a stall there for a while, and ended up
visiting Wordsworth House. It's taken me 9 years living hereabouts to get
around to it, and it's very interesting and well worth the visit.

Oh dear! Expensive business to represent for an MOT these days. My car got
through with a warning that one front tyre will soon need renewing- uneven
wear due to the power steering. Last time we were in Cockermouth we visited
Wordsworth house. I suppose being tourists it's the accepted thing to do.
Living in |Rutland, only 2 miles from Rutland Water, with its famous bird
population, we never get down there. Sod's law.

Thank you, Rex. I'm ok now. A bit shaky but not enough as not to go to the
last flea market of the year, in Drammen. Yip, no, I'm too week to jubil.

I liked the look of a new car last week. The garage offered me 400 for my
old estate car, in part exchange. I didn't buy. Owning a car is like

Bummer. Well, he's had it a long time. I'm sure he's had his money's worth
out of it. Time to find new money for a new one.
I just gave away my old Nissan Sunny to a guy on the Freecycle network.
It'll cost him several hundred pounds and a lot of work to get it
roadworthy, but he'll have a good wee car out of it. It wasn't worth my
while. It had been standing at the back for a year, giving me meaningful
looks...

Orly is on the verge of giving his van away too. We went for a run out
yesterday and it boiled-again. B'gerd if he we can find out why. Anyone an
expert on Toyota Hiace long van, 1992/93 model, out there who would help a

Correct me if I've gone bananas. You own an old estate car yet owning a new
car is like pouring money down the drain. Something just won't click for me
here.?
Your old estate car has no sign plates and you stands rusting in the long

It does seem to be a contadiction but it is logical. My old car is fine. It
is just getting older. A new one will cost me 12,000 or so and be worth
about 9,500 the minute I drive it home. so why not stick with the 400
banger if it's still going strong? It doesn't stand rusting in the grass, it
stands rusting in the garage. And it just passed its MOT!
By the way, how are you this morning. No migraine? Vearandah still healthy?
No Hangover? Etc etc?

The remains of a migraine siving slowly out of my head and away on the
breeze. I can't seem to consentrate 100% today, probably due to the 4 tblets
I took in twio days. I'm of to town now in the cool sunshine to buy a little
care parcel for a Cumbrian.
See all the mistakes? - and some I have already corrected. See you all
later.

I'm with you, Rex. I keep a car until it will no longer serve.
Over here many people change cars every 2 to 4 years. Salt used
on the roads is tough on the bodies and they rust out fast. You
can avoid that fate if you take some special care but that costs
money too. My last car was 12 years old when it finally needed
so many repairs it didn't make sense to keep it longer. I bought
the latest model of the very same car which should last me until
2014!

The present Vauxhall was registered in 1993, we have done 106,000miles and
it's fine. No oil leaks, still capable of 100mph if you put your foot down.
No rust and still doing 50mpg on a motorway run. I just have the feeling
that things wont go on forever like that so I am looking for an estate car
about 1 year old with about 6 -8,000 miles on the clock. Unfortunately the
same model is now discontinued.

What a difference the climate makes. As I said, up here they use
salt and brine to keep roads safe in winter which destroys the
bodywork. Rust takes hold in as little as 4 years on north
american cars such as GM's and Fords. Typically in the 6-7 year
time-frame on Toyotas like mine. You can beat it with a lot of
careful attention or with expensive bodywork but who has the
time or money? I'm trying a different rust-proofing scheme on my
latest car - a heavy oil spray annually. Have tried polymers and
whatnot in the past. So far nothing really beats the rust for
very long.
In California, the nitric/nitrous oxide air pollution destroys
all the rubber bits on a car but the bodies look great.

We just sold our van (Nissan) and bought a Toyota Matrix. The
kids have grown and we are no longer mini-van people.

Most schemes to prevent rusting involve spraying some muck into
the panels and whatnot. Some argue the holes they drill to
access these areas become the initiation sites for rust! I had
one car where the rust spray got into the seat belt mechanism
and it never worked properly afterward. Inevitably there are
knicks and pops from stones and general wear and tear and the
rust starts. Then you're done in just a couple of seasons.
I think you're safe from the noxious fumes of southern
California where you are.

I am very tempted to say the curries but that's not quite true. It's the
pollution. We are 20 miles west of Liecester and the prevailing wind is from
that direction. Our old GP genuinely used to put the high incidence of
childhood asthma in Rutland, down to that source.
