couple of questions
Evening group...

why did Class 26 get their door windows removed & filled?

and

what merit do the different shape buffers bring - i.e. freight 86's
with squovals? Is it a cost, weight efficiency thing or do they
provide better performance in some way?

cheers all

I don't know about 86s in particular, but some of the variants of buffers
are intended to reduce the danger of buffer-locking on tight curves.

Something to do with the cab door windows being smashed on a regular
basis during token changes along single lines - the driver would catch
the token with his arm, the token would swing back and hit the glass.

I thought it might be something like this - everything seems to get
ovals, even back in the 80's 37s used to get them on overhauls. I
guess virtical movement is not so much a problem with modern track -
but then a lot of kettles had ovals also... thanks
