platform numbers
Hi
Is there anyway of finding platform numbers for scheduled trains in
advance? Sorry if this may be a dumb question but I no longer live in
England, so am a bit `out of date`
Cheers Tony.

The Journey Planner at http://www.travelinescotland.com/ shows platform
numbers, but these can of course change.

Depends very much on the location. At Birmingham New Street, for
example, it is unfortunately quite common for a "platform
alteration" announcement just minutes before the train is due to
depart. At the other extreme though, some stations the track
layout dictates which platform the train has to use - many smaller
stations have two platforms, one for each direction, and it is
impossible for a train to come in on the "wrong" platform.
Where are you thinking of travelling to/from?

In Britain we don't seem to keep selected services to specific platforms
It seems to the whim of the signalman
I think I have utilised all of the platforms at Paddington on my trips
to / from Oxford or Didcot
Similarly in former years the WAGN service to Kings Lynn sometimes
started from the main-line platforms at Kings Cross whilst others from
the shorter suburban platforms, which was quite a pain on a crowded
main-concourse when it was only displayed minutes before departure.
However many stations platform track layouts mean only certain platforms
are available for particular services
For instance Clapham Junction Sussex coast trains from Victoria can only
access 13 or 15 where 15 is normally for local suburban trains
Let us know your travel plans and I am sure some of us here can give you
some at least approximation of likely platform.

Hogsmeade station.

Nope! The always leave from platform 9 3/4 from King's Cross station TO
Hogsmeade station (Hogwarts castles being on the outskirts of Hogsmeade)!

Re: platform numbers
There is of course the occasional Platform 0
and Waterloo East is lettered A B C D no doubt to avoid confusion with
the Main Line station.
and of course the missing platforms
isn't it 7 that is missing from London Bridge
or the trackless platforms like No. 1 at Clapham Junction

KX Thameslink is lettered too, for the same reason, I would assume.
Leeds had a "Platform W" (for Wellington St?) for a while while it was
being rebuilt.

I've seen trams in Wimbledon station but no tracklesses (trolleybuses) in
Clapham Junction.
