Laser printer refills
Anyone out there had experience of refilling laser printer cartridges? Does
it work? Is it a viable proposition? I use a lot of refills in my publishing
and want to cut down my costs.

I used laser printers for years before these cheap inkjet things appeared,
but I never tried refilling the cartridges. I still had nightmares from my
youth, when I worked in an office with an early Xerox machine. (Similar
technology.) They didn't use cartridges back then: you just had to pour raw
toner into a little drawer and push it back in again. You can imagine the
mess from something like that. Being the youngest member of staff, I
invariably ended up with this unpleasant job.

Those Xeroxes actually came supplied with their own fire extinguishers. They
ran so hot that every time there was a paper jam it would catch light. Oh
happy days....

I'm not sure what you mean by 'refills'. Certainly you do not
mean DIY like there are kits for inkjet printer cartridges. We
use reconditioned toner cartridges. Have for ten years. The
fellow from whom we buy our laser printers somehow refills the
toner. We have HP printers BTW. There's no issue of them working
poorly. So long as the photo drum is undamaged (some models of
laser printers have the pohoto drum separate from the toner
cartrige), they can be refilled with the appropriate toner.
There's different size particles in various toners - obviously
you need a finer grind for 1200 dpi printing than for older 300
dpi. There's been the odd bad one but the fellow always makes
good on them. They do save some money.

I mean refill the empty toner cartridge with more toner. There are firms
that advertise toner by the bottle. It would reduce the cost of a toner
cartridge by over 50% but is no doubt rather messy. The mess doesn't bother
me - I have workshop space and rubber gloves - but the print standard does.

PS Ally, I do not wish to catch fire doing it!

How do you know? Have you tried it. Edith? Or are you guessing again?

When the colours get darker or it leaves black marks on the paper then it's
the glass roll on the tone cassette that's dirty and you can try to clean
away the dust on it very carefully using an air compressor, never touch the
glass or it will be ruined....and if you think I know what I'm talking
about....gasp!!!!!!!!!

I should have received an OSCAR for that translation.

Orlando has had his printer for 5 years. I doubt it would be good enough to
print 10 more of my books, containing 1000 pages all together and with lots
of colours again. Orlando would have to buy a new printer.

I edited my first book myself which was dumb. I noticed all the mistakes
afterwards, mostly because I didn't expect to get to completion with it. I
plan to do a better job on my next one- if ever Orlando has the time to help
me :0(
