Haunted microwave
Last evening, with B***** all on the TV we watched a recording of Most
Haunted (Which actually put me to sleep!) Erica wanted a round of crust
toasted and I fancied a beetroot sandwich so I tried to defrost some bread.
The microwave refused to do anything. There was electricty to it - the
digital clock was working, but nothing else worked. We decided to go out
this morning and buy a new microwave. (The old one was a very OLD one)
Imagine my surprise. Just out of habit I put my cereals into the thing,
pressed the button and it works again! Is it haunted? Do you electric buffs
have a more acceptable explanation?

Probably not had the door shut properly (or a dodgy doorswitch), so the
interlock would be broken and hence no power to the magnetron. In
such circumstances, all timer electronics, etc, still usually work
satisfactorily.

If not, better get an excorcist in.

Much easier to fill it with garlic onions and turn the nob. They'd probably

Good suggestion. We may well have a faulty door catch - everything else
about the thing is getting faulty. It's an old model. It has a setting for
dinosaur steaks.

If you do more blackberry picking, would you mind going back to this
hole on the aerodrome you fell down and photograph it for me? It
sounds interesting. Where is the aerodrome? Has it another name?

I took a photo of hole recently. There was this big old tree, and I was out
with the dogs. There was a huge hollow in the tree, but it was too high up
for me to see into, so I held my camera up as high as I could, set the
flash, and pointed it into the hole, just so that I could see what was in
it. Very useful strategy for shortarses...

If I go back I will do that. The airfield is actually spelled Spanhoe, my

Thinking about it, I realise the fast cook button was the only one that

I used to use the soles of my shoes when my bike brakes weren't up to
scratch. I was always wearing out my shoe leather, trying to stop after

Probably some sort of porridge, Edith. Not as good as making it on the hob,

I could have fixed that up for you no charge. Too bad you live
so far away.

Don't forget to have your studded winter tires put on. It'll be
snowing next week.

You should know better than anyone that old people like warm
things. They keep their houses at 27C and still wear sweaters.

Warming up their food is just a natural extention of that
phenomenon.

No. No snow here for a long time, I believe. It looks more like rain this
Autumn. I have broad all year winter tires with a good deep pattern so that
bit's ok. Thanks for the thought.

Not mine. I'd rather freeze than suffocate. I'm a big problem for Orlando
who is always cold, windows wide open and ...I wonder if I have a touch of
claustrophobia.? Could be, or, I just like fresh air.

It's a crime what you have to pay these days. We just had a guy
here to "inspect" the fire extinquishers. He walked around for 5
minutes, looked at the gauges on the tanks, and put his initials
on a paper tag attached to each. $100.

I was just kidding about the snow so soon. We're still hot and
sunny here. Shorts and t-shirts. Just a bit cooler overnights
these days.

You have a point. My father was particularly keen on fresh air
and open windows. Maybe it's just north american seniors who
love it hot.

Mebbe he's like me and down with a virus. I can just about manage to answer
the phone and sound bright and healthy when I'm talking to customers, but in
reality I'm all floppy and can barely switch on a computer but not much
else.

Just as well there's still work to be done here: in the middle of designing
a website and printing out price lists. I hate not doing anything useful
during a day. Then I'll go and fall asleep a bit more.

Numbers. Numbers. There wuz this yan teim all the nubers were going to a
party. All were admitted except number 8. A number stood at the door and
when number 8 tried to enter he was refused. "No number 8s in here" said the
bouncer and bounced him down the steps.
Number 8 stood up, braced himself and red in the face shouted, "Who the
ell's number 8. Can't you see I have a tight belt on."

Well, he's from a hotter climate than you, isn't he? If you could survive
your first16 years in cold, damp Cumbria, Norway will be a cinch for you,
whereas poor old Orly, growing up in Chile (which reportedly isn't as chilly

I, but when they've warmed it up, they sit down and forget it, poor darlings
and it's back to turning the heaters up again-with a 1 piece.

Did you have to resort to getting dressed under the bedclothes like we did
sometimes? I remember laying my clothes out at the side of the bed the night
before, so that when it was time to get up I could get dressed in bed where
it was warm. I've known people to store their clothes between the blankets
through the night: not only were they easily accessible the next day, they'd
also be warm. (And probably a bit smelly, but nobody cared back then.)

I definitely warmed my cloths in bed before putting them on. You could
write your name in the frost patterns inside my bedrooom window. I know it
sounds dramatic but the winters were harder. The river outside my window was
tidal but it regularly froze over. Do any of you recall the winter of 1947?

Heh, I did that as a student, but I'd forgotten.
I've lived in some chuffin' cold places!

Things will be even harder if the Red Arrows don't find the mystery plane.
D'yuh think he was a Frie, Rex, or perhaps a haunting, or even a terrorist?
Daren't even think about it.

I have heard no more about that incident, Edith. I'm sure the Rutland Times
will put it on the
front page any week now.

They sound about as up-to-date as the West Cumbrian Gazette, our local free
advertising rag.

About 15 months ago FoE were doing a bit of campaigning to get some plastics
recycling started, and collected people's signatures which we put into
plastic bottles (the message-in-a-bottle campaign or something). FoE are
always coming up with these slightly naff publicity-seeking notions.
Anyways, we had this big pile of plastic bottles with bits of paper inside,
and took them along to the recycling area of Tesco's car park, where I took
some photos of some of our campaigners surrounded by piles of bottles. We
then sent the photos, along with a short press release, to the Gazette, who
had actually asked for us to send both the story and the photo.

We heard no more.

A few months ago a plastic bottle recycling skip appeared at Tesco's, so we
felt we had achieved something, even without the publicity photo. Hurrah.

And then a couple of weeks ago, there was obviously absolutely *no* local
news at all, and someone on the Gazette staff must have been ratching about
among old photos, because suddenly this old, out-of-date photo appeared in
the paper! I haven't actually seen a copy myself, but I gather the story
doesn't make a lot of sense either and the photo doesn't quite relate to the
story they've written.

<sigh>
