No Smoking on Caledonian Sleepers
More railway smoking accommodation is about to be stubbed out. From
Newsrail Express:
"CALEDONIAN SLEEPER ON-TRAIN SMOKING - POLICY CHANGE
Smoking is NOT permitted within Caledonian Sleeper Berth and Seated
accommodation.
Smoking IS however currently permitted within the Lounge Car
accommodation ONLY aboard all Caledonian Sleeper services, leaving it
as the only remaining Scottish rail service that accommodates smoking.
PLEASE NOTE THAT WITH EFFECT FROM SUNDAY 9 OCTOBER 2005 SMOKING WITHIN
THE LOUNGE CAR AREA OF ALL CALEDONIAN SLEEPER SERVICES WILL NOT BE
PERMITTED."
(Sorry about all the SHOUTING, that's how it appears at
<http://www.atoc.org/traveltrade/newsrail/pdfs/ne296_03_09_05.pdf>.)

I was rather hoping that ScotRail could come up with a compromise -
rebuild the lounge cars with an open verandah at one end, marshal them
at the end of the train and allow smokers to burn their dead leaves in
the open air while trundling along the West Highland at a gentle 30 mph
or so.
Hey, it worked in "Double Indemnity"!

Why not marshall it at the front of the train, for the benefit of the
Class 37 bashers?

It still works if you've got the money!
The Royal Scotsman has an open verandah ;)

Cheapest tour is 640 for one night (but hey, it's all inclusive!)

Are passengers really allowed to ride outside on that? Given the
paranoia which exists, it would seem an obvious target for the safety
mafia.
